How should i label a friend/family get together before the wedding?

Laura, on January 29, 2020 at 12:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I would like to plan my own family get together before my wedding in lieu of a bridal shower, but don't know what to call it.

I really would like to see my family and friends in a more casual setting before the wedding, but I do not want gifts (our registry is very small). I've thought about calling it an engagement party, but we got engaged back in late August, and I've heard that it's odd for someone to throw their own engagement party.

However, I'm hesitant to call it a shower since we will not be doing gifts. I know that some people do showers without gifts, but it seems a bit odd to me and I suspect people might bring gifts anyway.

I rarely see my family, so I just wanted a chance to see everyone so I can catch up (because I likely would not get to do so at my wedding).

What is a bridal brunch? Also, it would ideally be co-ed.

Why don’t you just have a party that has nothing to do with your wedding?

Good idea! Would a potluck be tacky?

If you’re not asking for gifts I suppose it wouldn’t be awful, but you really should just feed people if you’re going to host them

I'd just make it not wedding related and have something like a birthday party, housewarming party, 4th of july, superbowl, etc. related party.

True. I think ideally I would like it to be related to my wedding if there is a way to do it that's not odd or tacky.

Maybe something like a couples bbq? I'm thinking along the lines of bridal luncheon or bridal tea but for everyone.

Why does it have to be wedding related? Just invite everyone out to dinner.

We threw our own engagement party, odd or not lol. No one offered, and we had just bought a condo, so we decided to host it in our new home. Some people brought gifts, but we didn’t ask for them. It was a brunch, so I made a bunch of breakfast/lunch food, and sangria, and it was super fun!
