How old is too old for a flower girl?

Katie, on December 8, 2010 at 10:59 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

So I have 2 nieces (Summer 8 and Winter 2) and I want them to both be part of the wedding as flower girls. At the time of the wedding Summer will be 9 and Winter will be 2. Do you think 9 would be too old to be a flower girl? I was planning on having them both be flower girls so Winter will follow Summer and it would work out better as Winter will only be 3 and everyone knows that toddlers don't always like to do what they are told lol, but I was just thinking about how much Summer is starting to grow up (that is hard for me to say since she is an aunties girl) and makes me wonder if maybe she is too old to be a flower girl. Suggestions on how I could make her feel not so little since there is an age difference are welcome.

I don't know if there's an official cut off age (personally I'd say 10-11) So I think 9 is young enough.

I will also have a 9 year old - my sister just married and hers were 11 and 12 and they were just so happy tobe part of it they were cool. I would leave it to the 8 year old, if she feels too uncomfortable maybe consider her a junior bridesmaid with a very special job or helping the flower girl? (my flowergirl is walking with my ring barer to keep him on track)

I agree w/ above, i thk personally there isn't an exact cut off age but over 10 is too old IMO. I'm ending up just having 1 flower girl b/c the 3 yr old we wanted just is too unpredictable & won't listen really....so its not like we want perfect angels but we thought it'd work out since the other flower girl is 5 & well behaved, the younger would follow, but eh..we're just not going that route.

    Good luck Smiley smile

Thanks! I was thinking I could have her pick out a little different style dress than her sister that way she doesn't feel as little. Kind of like a Jr bridesmaid/flower girl. Then I could just have her walk behind her sister and the ring bear.

My Jr. Bridesmaids are 10 and 11 and are walking with my flower girl down the aisle because my flower girl is shy.

I think 9 is still okay to be a flower girl, especially if it helps her little sister be comfortable. (btw what adorable names)

IMO, around 10 (so 4th grade?) is a good cutoff age. But, I think more importantly, it depends on the child's mentality/maturity. Some 9/10 year old girls may think they are "too old" to be a FG while others love the idea. The girl should be excited and honored so I would ask her Mom if she's said anything about it. At the end of the day, it's just a title, and if she's happier being called a "jr. bridesmaid" I would go that route.

Thanks, I think I might ask her when I have them over night this weekend and see what she wants to do.

9 is still a good age and it would be good to have her there to help get her sister down the aisle.

Ask her! If she is embarassed to be a flower girl make her a junior BM's. But if jumps at the chance then go ahead with it.

FS's niece is going to be 11 and wants to be our flower girl. As long as she's excited about it I'm not concerned about the age.

My sister is 11 and she wants to be a flower girl.. I personally think she's too old so I have made her a junior bridesmaid..I think 9 would be the cut off.. At the end of the day its your special day and you can do what ever you would like Smiley smile

FS niece will be 9 when our wedding comes and she's gonna be a Jr BM. i kinda thought she was a little too old to be a flower girl, and she was in love with the fact that she got to be part of the "big girls"

I think ill ask her what she wants to do. I think it will be fun for her to make her own decision.

That sounds like the best solution. It doesn't really matter what you call her. She's probably very excited just to be a part of the wedding. Your processional will, no doubt, be just as delightful as your nieces' names!
