How much was your wedding cake?

Courtney, on July 24, 2019 at 3:46 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 21
This is what I am currently working on and checking prices. I literally had no idea that a cake would be a lot of money. I guess I thought wrong. I saw on here where someone was spending 1,000 on their cake and that's fine but definitely not in our budget.
I've checked with about 4 people so far. The highest was 450 and 420. Middle was 330 and cheapest was 220. I just really don't know what to do about this. I want to make sure that it looks good and tastes good, but I don't want to spend a lot of money on just a cake.
We have a friend that can do FH's cake. He wants his to look like a tree stump and be rustic due to a nickname that he has. I don't think his will cost us very much.
We are having about 150 guests and I don't know whether we should have a 3 or 4 tier cake. One of FH's friends got married in March last year and she said she had 250 and her cake was only 3 tier.
We are getting married April 18th and I know there is a lot of time left. I just feel like there is so much to do and I feel like time is going to start to fly by especially when I start back to work. I'm a middle school teacher.

I went to a dozen bakeries and the average for me for a three tier that would serve about 200 was legit like $600. My cake ended up costing a bit under $300 but that's cause I went with the cheapest bakery in my city and honestly it tasted eh ahah that's what I get for going cheap

How many tiers you need depends on the size of the tiers... Just tell your baker how many guests you are having and they will tell you what you need.

Where I live wedding cakes are $10-$12 per slice so $450 for 150 guests is really cheap to me. You can look into cupcakes or other types of dessert.

My cake is from a well known and highly reviewed bakery in LA. They charge $4 per slice for buttercream cakes and $5 per slice for fondant cakes. She recommended to order 20% less than the estimated people, some people just don't eat cake. For an estimated 275 people (less 20%) is $1,100 plus delivery and set up.

The bakery in the OC where I got our engagement party cake was only $2.50 per slice for buttercream.

Okay so maybe then I need to go with 130 guests if we are inviting 150.... that will make it cheaper. I am leaning towards the $450. She charges $3 per slice for buttercream cake so if I do 130 it will be $390. I've been communicating with her and she says she doesnt charge for delivery/set up.

This is what I am thinking, but I do not want the flowers on the top and not these many tiers.

Our cakes tots $250. Were getting a 3 tier (with the top 2 tiers styrofoam) and then a sheet cake in the back. This is how we were able to keep the coat down. Sheet cake is always a lot cheaper, even as specialty bakeries (which is where we went). The styrofoam layers are only $35 each, and it still looks like a real cake (because they actually frost and decorate the styrofoam as if it were cake). And guests are none the wiser that they’re actually eating sheet cake.

Our baker here in MD quoted us $500 for a two-tier, two flavor cake. The first tier is 10" and other 6" with an additional sheet cake. This also includes the delivery fee.

We saved by going with simple white buttercream with little decoration.

I found another inspiration cake. Do yall think this would look good with pink rosettes instead of white? Our colors are mint, pink, and gold. Also attaching the cake topper I like from Etsy.

I’m planning on making cupcakes with my mom beforehand. I refuse to spend hundreds of dollars on a cake that will more than likely be super gross tasting (as most wedding cakes are)

I’m estimating it’ll cost me about $100-$150 to get all my cupcakes made, and that’s a fairly generous budget for it.

I am paying roughly $3.00/pp. So totaling about $320.00 because I wanted an extra special design on the cake. I have seen a lot of people on here talk about doing a small cake to cut into for the pictures. Then sheet cake to serve everyone.

Personally I can't justify going crazy on a cake. I'll be doing a regular sheet cake or a handful of smaller cakes in different flavors. Don't be afraid to grab a sheet cake from a grocery store, nobody will notice.

Wow there are lots of price ranges. I got mine from an amazing bakery in St. Petersburg, FL and it was $425 (including delivery) for 60 people. It was 3 tiered.

Not sure where you are but in So Cal, we have a grocery store named Stater Bros. They have wedding cakes that are delicious and not expensive. They have a 3 tier wedding cake that costs $89.99!! Also, my soon to be sister in law purchased a small cake that she could afford and a sheet cake (that was in the kitchen and passed out when the cake was cut) because sheet cake is less expensive. Worked out pretty good for her.
