How Much Prep for the First Dance?

Michael, on August 3, 2022 at 7:37 PM

What are couples doing for their first dance? Or are you just skipping that? Has anyone gotten their fiance to a dance practice or even more for a choreographed dance? I would like it to be a little more than an impromptu dance.

We have been learning ballroom dance for the last 8 weeks and we can nearly do the whole song perfectly! A friend of ours gives us private lessons. We meet up once a week for a few hours. It feels so special.

We signed up for a 5-lesson package at a local dance studio. They choreograph a dance to our song of choice and we attend 5 1-hour sessions the weeks leading up to the wedding. I've wanted to take dance lessons FOREVER, so I'm super excited!

    Taylor,

That sounds best by having a friend that will teach it. 8 weeks sound more like I would expect Thanks for mentioning how special it has made you feel. That is an important advantage.

    Paige,

I'll have to see how difficult some of the choreographed dances on the videos are. If they are too difficult, the dance studio (maybe online) would be really useful. I suppose though we could gloss over any moves too difficult. But yeah. It will be fun learning dance again. Hoping the best.

We are doing 2 traditional Lithuanian wedding dances along with our 1st dance, so we will be working on it for a few months before hand. He joined my dance group last year so it hasn’t been too difficult to get him to work on dancing with me. You can always ask him to do a date night and do a waltz class just for fun and bring it up after how you liked that and would like to do it for the 1st dance.

    Julija,

Yes. Lots of people mentioned about making dance lessons part of a date night. it is great he is part of the dance group already. I've just been figuring out stuff on my own. It is mostly my selection of songs/dance and other plans. I've not coordinated this yet. I'll have to propose something once I get a few things sorted out. It's fun so far. I have not heard yet of anyone not working out the dance yet.

Do the traditional dances require another dress for the reception? Just asking while you had posted here.

We don't have a special song. So it is just left up to me to find something that works. We can make it our special song at that time.

The past 2 weddings I went to this summer neither of the couples did any prep for their first dance. They both just wanted to take the moment to be close and talk about the craziness of the day. I think it’s up to the individual couple to figure out what works for them and what is most important and matches with their vision. 🥰

Yep. that's not me so much. I need the practice and the plan. We're just not dancers. At least the planned dance would keep my mind focused and maybe help us dance as a couple.

A lot of couples will change into their traditional garb and have the other people who are dancing the dances do so as well (we are doing Sudutė, an all girls dance saying good bye to the bride, and Resginėlė, the tying the couple together dance). We decided that we didn’t want to waste the time changing when we could be doing photos as we are leaning towards not doing a 1st look. But if you are interested here is what said garb looks like and this is a picture of us doing Resginėlė at the Lithuanian Folk Dance Festival earlier this summer. How Much Prep for the First Dance? 1

That’s totally valid. I think the best place to start would be learning the basic box step waltz and see how you feel from there. The positive is that you can find that on YouTube and it’s repetitive so you can focus on it but still enjoy the moment. It also can be changed up and is very versatile so you can jazz it up as you see fit.

We'll definitely start off with the most basic but then try to add a turn or spin here and there. I think we can do that much

Absolutely!! Add a spin, take up some space on the dance floor by moving (really easy to do by just angling your steps a bit), and if you feel spicy do a little dip. 😏

Maybe not ready for that unless we have a good teacher. lol. Plus, it seems a challenge being all dressed up and in the spotlight. I'm not sure how we prepare for all that. Thanks for the encouragement.
