How Much Prep for the First Dance?

Michael, on August 3, 2022 at 7:37 PM

What are couples doing for their first dance? Or are you just skipping that? Has anyone gotten their fiance to a dance practice or even more for a choreographed dance? I would like it to be a little more than an impromptu dance.

    Alexis,

    Is that private classes then?

I took a dance class or two many summers ago. It mostly covered just some basic steps, not much more. So maybe the additional classes would be useful too.

    Angie,

That's great that it worked out well for both of you. It reminds me of some other wedding dance video I saw years ago. It would be too complex for most people but reminded me how an entertaining dance helps set the tone for others to join in.

Thanks Chelsea. It sounds like the preparation made the dance a whole lot more comforting.

I'm just hoping to survive it.

Don't worry, it'll be great. I thought that same thing before our's, but the preparation definitely helped to calm the nerves. Once you just start practicing, you'll feel a weight lifted as it all comes together. Afterwards you'll feel exhilarated just knowing that you shared this special moment with your friends & family, and it goes by so fast! Easier said than done, but don't stress too much.

    Brittany,

That sounds helpful. The classes i took during a summer only covered some common steps: the box step, the feather step (or something like that), and maybe another one or two.

    Sara,

haha. I like how you characterized his view "he doesn't 'hate' the idea."

That ability to wing it is also useful if you have a dance choreographed.

    Courtney,

That's great it has been so much more than you had anticipated. It is funny and great that the lessons became a moment of calm. Also, I like how they have taught some other dances. Thanks for sharing.

We practice in the kitchen haha. He ll just randomly turn on our song while I m in there doing something its very sweet. But we don't have any choreography or anything it ll just be a sweet short dance, planning it too much would take me out of the moment I d be too focused on not missing step. Do whatever works for you guys and make it fun! Cheers!

    Rosebud,

That's great you have it down more naturally. Do you also add some flair to the dancing?

This is our moment together. Really, that should be the end of story. But we will need a little plan here. And it does seem like the choreographed dances can be fun.

I’m trying to convince him to! Lol. But if not, he will just be playing guitar. We’re doing a slower acoustical version of “Annie’s Song” by John Denver.

    Rosebud,

Oh. you didn't mention that before. That will work out great then, Ginger.

Just with his imagination of being Fred Astaire, that should make the dance more interesting.

Sounds like you got it worked out.

Hi we are doing our first dance off of a R&B song that I let him picked out. And then I heard the song and it's one of my favorite songs I didn't know that he did to. And it will be sk special because he said that's how he really feels about me 😢🥰🥰. I love it. There was 1 dance that he wanted to do but our schedules are so crazy at the moments so if we need to wing it they will never know lol lol or we may practice some

That is great that he selected a song that was one of your favorites. Also, he sees you in that song. I myself never know the name of songs but still recognize lots of them. I've not thought of a song but was checking some of the dance videos mentioned earlier. Neither have I figured out how much practice might be needed. If not too much, it could be fun,.

Hope the best whether you wing it or get some practice.

That gives me some hope. Or it will drive me crazy with all the options out there.

I'll have to check whether the videos teach you to dance or just tell you how to get through the routine they define. But this is good info. I maybe have to address bigger concerns though.
