How much money do you spend on alcohol?

Katherine, on September 8, 2019 at 12:48 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9
So today we met with our venue and we were going over all the details, such as food and drinks. For 4 hours of unlimited alcohol it’s $3,200, i feel like that’s so much and the guests aren’t going to drink up to that amount. They gave us another option of setting a limit on alcohol but my FH and I don’t really know what to set it at. We were thinking $1000 is that too much or too little? Help! (For around 100 guests)

Depends on price of drink. Are you doing beer and wine or including liquor? Do you have a significant amount of nondrinkers? If each drink was $5 which seems low, that would give each guest only 2 drinks.

How much is each drink? We paid around 8k for alcohol I believe for 160 guests. But at my venue a glass of wine is $12-$16.

It’s a combination of beer and liquor. Not everyone will drink probably around 40 out of the 100 will have a drink. The way that they explained was that they would charge for the bottle depending how much was drank from it, so if only one person took a shot of something we would get charged as a drink but if it was like 20 shots then it would be per bottle.

What happens after the money is gone?

Also how are you determining who is drinking? Is it children VS adults? From my experience even typical non-drinkers will get a glass of something at a celebration.

How much is the average drink assuming you aren’t charged by the bottle? Also how do they handle sparkling wine or champagne? If someone gets a single glass and no one else orders it will you still be charged for the bottle (typically restaurants and caterers have to kill the bottle at the end of the night because the bubbles will be dead).

If you do stick with the consumption bar I’d highly recommend doing signature drinks to subtlely nudge people towards certain liquors (assuming being charged for a whole bottle is cheaper than individual drinks of different brands).

150 people my alcohol is a little over 3,000 for open bar. I think 3,000 is about right. We have ours for 5 hours.

We spent $5,200 (before tip) for 125 guests, full open bar & champagne toast. That was for 5 hours.

If it was me, I would definitely look at limiting the amount of alcohol that could be served. Like maybe only offer a few kinds or brands. Another option would be to maybe offer just beer and a few specialty drinks. For our wedding, we are only offering 2 kinds of beer and 1 kind of wine. Our venue didn't allow liquor and requested that we hire a bartender. Our caterer is bringing a bartender to serve our alcohol. You might want to check with your caterer.
