How much is too much for a bridesmaid dress?

Marti, on August 11, 2010 at 3:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

I have been putting off picking bridesmaid dresses out because everytime I look at the prices of the ones I like I feel incredibly guilty. My bridesmaids have been amazing so far and have not complained once, but I know they all can't afford a super expensive dress. How much were the dresses you picked out for your bridesmaides? How much is too much for a dress?

My bridesmaids dresses were $250. I gave them all options to vote on and they ranged from $99 to $250. I told them the $250 was my favorite, but they didn't have to choose it if they couldn't afford it. They all chose that one. Maybe you can do the same?

My BM dresses were $80 (from $100 because I also bought my dress at DB). I chose these in part because I liked them, they can wear them again (honestly, not just saying that lol), and because of the price as well- my MOH is a first year law student, and my other BM is getting married herself on a very, very tight budget.

These are their dresses, in black: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Short-Charmeuse-Dress-with-Ruched-Waist-and-Pockets-83707_Bridal-Party-Features-Most-Popular-Bridesmaids

I think going over $150 is a bit much, but try to stay under $100 if you can.

My BM dress (that I wore at Analy's wedding) was $140 I think. Anything more than $200 is too much, IMO.

PS: My dresses were expensive but I didn't have them pay for anything else. I covered hair and makeup, hotels, food the day of and gas money. So take that into consideration as well.

I think under 150 is good. Check out bestbridalprices.com and weddingshoppe.com. Several dresses I found in stores that were 170-180, I found for 140ish on those sites.

I also am planning on staying at 150 or under. I am going to go to DB because my girls are scattered all over and it will just be easier for them.

I let them pic their dress at alfred angelos the prices range from 130-180 but there was a discount because I bought my dress there too but average cost was $150 -170 after tax .I think anything over $150 is alot but when Im in weddings $200 is my limit if the dress is hideous my limit is $150 so let them pic something they will be happier to pay when they actually like the dress

We had picked out a dress that was 120, but it was going to be discontinued so my BMs would have had to order it 6 weeks ago (definitely too soon, since my wedding isn't until next october). One of my BMs found one for 150 that we all liked, and I let my girls vote: pay less money but purchase it now when they might change sizes, or pay a little more but be able to wait until next spring. They chose the more expensive one.

Either way, I would still not go over 150, unless you have the money in your budget to help offset the cost. (I was a BM in a wedding once where the bride picked a dress for 200, but gave each of us 50 toward the dress).

I was wondering the same thing. The dress I picked is $120 with a sash for $20. They do get a discount because i did get my dress from there. I wish I was in the position to help but I can not and one of my BM's its her, her husband, and son are all in the wedding so they have to buy for the whole family.

Why don't you pay for them if you feel so bad? I got mine for $99 each on clearance from david's bridal online and had them shipped direct to my 3 girls so they could do alterations on their own. they're party dresses or prom, not long gowns though so that's why they were so cheap probably. but you could get them short cute dresses they can wear again, from macys.com or wherever, and a lot cheaper than long gowns.
