How much is the Postage???

Groomzilla, on September 1, 2012 at 6:52 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

Okay...I've read it before on here from others...the tip is: Take a fully finished/completed invitation, envelope and all to the Post Office. Do IT.

Picked up a completed invitation...officially weighed it in my hand and declared to FW: This has GOT to be $0.45. It barely weighs anything. Then I remembered what people wrote..so we walked to our neighborhood post office to get postage stamps and have it weighed officially. I told the USPS smugly, " 45 cents, right?". "No sir...$0.65. Do want stamps with that? Smiley winking. So we promptly bought the $0.65 stamps along with 45cent ones for the RSVP envelopes and went on our marry (pun intended) way. Moral is: WEIGH your invites!! Smiley smile

Yea, if it is over an ounce, it bumps up to 65 cents. It's hard to tell with your hand. We have a small kitchen scale that I will use to weigh letters or small packages so I can have a pretty accurate idea of postage before I go to the post office.

At least you knew not to get square!

Your invites would have probably cost you over $1 per in postage.

Lucky you! Mine were .90 each and I had a couple international that were $2.30 each.

    Total postage for Invites & RSVP's... $91.00

Just wrote out 38 Thank you Cards for my 1st shower... so there's another $17.00

I still have a bachelorette party and another shower to come that will require more thank you cards and of course the Wedding Thank you cards. I budgeted $100 for postage... What a joke that was - I'll be closer to $200 just for freaking stamps when everything is said and done. LOL

Yes - take in the sample to be weighed. Good thing you did it!

AND, if you feel like the charge doesn't sound right, take them to a SECOND post office for another opinion.

One post office charged us .84 per invite, another one charged us .64. I asked at the cheaper post office what was up with that, and she said some offices overcharge b/c they assume something is too thick to be machine processed but they don't actually check. She had a little fake slot at her desk and our invite slipped right through it. Also, when we sent our STDs that office gave me the stamp and let me hand cancel all my envelopes myself at the desk.

Then again that is the post office where our carrier reports, and he keeps effing up our mail delivery. So I have a love/hate relationship with them. Smiley smile

Our postage for the invites was $1.45 each, but we don't have 45c stamps to start with in canada, for our RSVP's it was 61 cents

We are not at this stage yet, but we budgeted $200 (don't think I will need that much, but just in case) for postage. We are not looking at invitations until December.

    Square costs more, Hayley? Really?

@Marie...Yeah..I budgeted $60. Just spent $40...so I'm still within reason (so far).

IDK if square actually costs more if you're already paying higher postage though does it? Our STDs were square AND heavy, and they were only .64. The post office lady said they already had to be handled differently b/c of their weight, so it would have been like double charging for the non-standard shape? Maybe my post office is just weird.

Non-standard sizes like square usually cost more b/c the machine they use sorts the mail based on its proportions of length to width. Squares, tiny envelopes and really big ones can't go in the machine, so they charge more b/c it takes more labor to sort them.

Allegedly. I have my stink-eye trained on the USPS these days, ever since we got that RSVP a couple weeks ago postmarked March 15th. Smiley smile Grrrr.

Our invites were large and square. They cost 1.10 per envelope, and I hadn't budgeted enough, so we ended up not putting stamps on the RSVPs, because we just couldn't afford it..

I took mine to work and had it weighed by our mailroom. It came up .45 cents. I ordered some special stamps from zazzle.com so that scale better be right!

Not only weigh them, but, check the size, if they are not a traditional letter size. If they are larger, the could also cost a bit more.

You know, I live in Chicago... I can go find your photographer and drive him to the airport for your wedding... Just to be sure he gets there.... Then you'd Love me Even MORE!!!!

Glad you finally drank the kool-aid. I'm sure the Etsy table cards were Beautiful, but, for me, the $100 looks prettier in my pocket. VP might not be as fancy, but they will do the job (and then end up in the garbage) Smiley winking

    * and I wouldn't worry about the photographer... unless you see snow in the forecast and he is flying out of O'Hare. He signed a contract to do your wedding, and I don't think he would like the bad business from a negative review. To be safe, read over your contract and see what he writes about a replacement photographer in case of emergency?

Any thickness that causes the envelopes not to go through a standard postal machine also costs extra. For example, a ribbon or belly band on your pocketfold invitations will often add to the postage. We got hit with the extra charge due to our magnetic closures. It wasn't a big deal for us, because we were only sending a few invitations to the ceremony, and our at-home reception invitations were just 45 cents in postage. But for those sending a lot of invitations, it can mount up.

Mine were .25 grams too heavy and I had to add an extra 4cents to everyone in one cent stamps. They didn't look as pretty after.

My STDs were HUGE, an I didn't even think about postage, and just bought a couple books of stamps an sent them on their way.

My Aunt gets hers, and was like, "oh postage must have cost you a fortune", and I was like "what do you mean? I just put regular stamps on them...." she was like, oh I hope the envelopes don't say "postage due" (did NOT even know this actually happened)...

Luckily, it didn't and somehow the postage people just sent my ginormous STDs for regular postage prices! But, YES I will be checking on my invites!!! Smiley smile

It also costs more if they have ribbon or something on them that makes them thicker. Apparently then they have to be handled by hand instead of run through a machine... I wish I'd known that ahead of time! I would have left off the ribbon!
