How much did your wedding dress alterations cost (was quoted 1150)?

I originally got a dress from David's Bridal last year and alterations were about $300 for adding cups, shortening the hem, and adding a bustle. However I was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after and underwent lots of treatment (including double mastectomy and reconstruction). Needless to say my old dress doesn't fit at all anymore and I went to a more expensive boutique to look for a new one. I bought a sample dress there for $1500, but now the inhouse tailor quoted $1150 for alterations! This is to add the bustle, take in sides (it's a bit loose) and add boning, add cups, shorten the shoulder straps, shorten the hem (5 layers), and add in more lace lining for the bodice to hide my mastectomy scars.

I ended up paying it because I just had reconstruction surgery and only have 15 days left till my wedding/don't have the energy to shop around while recovering, but does this price seem super high??

I was thinking "yes" until I saw how many hems. I charge $250 for one hem .... you had 5 layers! Overall I think your charges were reasonable and fair.

Based on everything you had done (especially adding boning and hemming that many layers), this charge does sound reasonable/average for good tailor work. I hope you love your dress!!

Given that your dress has to be nearly redone to fit you perfectly , it sounds like a reasonable price. Hope it turns out great!

I agree with others, and since it also sounds like there was a very short timetable for getting everything done, this might qualify as a "rush order," so, unfortunately, the charges make sense. My daughter's alterations were pretty minimal -- taking the bodice in a little, adding cups, and a bustle (no hemming at all), and her total was pretty close to $500 -- and they had months to do it.

Thank you everyone, I think it ended up being a fair price for all the work she did, and I was so happy with how the dress turned out!
