How many dresses tried on before finding the one

RhnCasi419, on August 20, 2014 at 6:43 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

I am not consumed with worry yet, but I am starting to get a tad bit nervous. Timeline says that I should have one picked out/ordered by 1 year to 9 months before the wedding day. I have only tried on 6 dresses and I am not liking any of them so far! It doesn't help that I am an older first time bride and feel old in the lace styles, as beautiful as they are, I am thinking just go simple. Just curious how many dresses everyone tried before saying yes to the dress. I'm starting to hate the bridal shop I've gone into (all their styles are so gaudy - in fact, I never realized how ugly wedding gowns can be) - The search continues ...

I only tried on 3... well, 3 and a half. I say half because one of them wouldn't even go up over my hips. My dress was the first dress I tried on. I tried on the others, and ended up putting my dress back on. I knew it was the one the first time I wore it, but I didn't think I should want the first dress. It sounds kind of weird, but I felt like I was cheating myself by not trying more on.

Maybe take a break from shopping. You still have time! Just take a break from it for a couple weeks or a month. When you decide to try again, maybe check out all the boutiques, if you have any in your area. Good luck with your dress shopping! Let us know when you get it!

I think I tried in 10 or 12 between 2 appointments. I ended up getting one I tried on at the first appointment. It was funny bc at the second appointment I tried on one Oxbridge same dresses from the first appointment and loved it the second time. Thing is I didn't realize it was thrbsame dress from that first time. So...I took that to mean it was the one. I experienced the same tearful and excited reaction both times and didn't realize it was the same dress until getting home and looking at pics from both appts.

Don't get nervous. You have plenty of time. I found mine in February for my September wedding. You won't go for alterations until at least 2 months before the wedding. You'll be fine. Take your time. Enjoy shopping

I tried on 4 that were in the style that I thought I wanted and then I was switched to mermaid styles and tried on 2 before getting to the one!

I tried on 64! The one was probably dress #50 or so but I wanted to make sure it was right, plus I had so much fun trying them on. I didn't want regret later. I'm so glad I waited too, I found a dress that was different from all the others in my opinion. It was such a fun experience for me!

I tried on well over 20 dresses in 6 different shops. I do recommend trying styles that you may not necessarily be inclined to try. I thought I wanted something sleek and flowy, and ended up falling in love with a semi - ball gown with a tulle skirt. I would also recommend looking at different shops. The selection varied a lot between the shops that I visited, and so did the overall experience. Don't be discouraged, sometimes you have to dig a bit to find what works for you.

I tried on about 15-20 total dresses in 3 different stores. My dress ended up being the last dress at the first store in a shape (mermaid) and fabric (lace) that I never would have thought I'd end up with!

Have you tried on different fabrics and silhouettes? That will help you determine what look you like and feel good about, and then you can be particular about finding THE dress.

I tried on a total of 2 dresses. I spent hours online looking at thousands of dresses, styles, designers, boutiques, fabrics, colors, etc. I found 2 by the same designer that I loved online. I tried them both on and absolutely fell in love with the second. Not only did I fall in love with it, but it was on sale. On top of that, the sample was in the exact color I wanted. All said and done, I got the dress of my dreams for about 40% off!

Thank you to everyone, such great experiences to look forward to. @Happy In Hawaii 64 dresses!? I love it, that will be me, haha. I only hope I will also think it will be a fun experience.

Well, I've only gone into 1 bridal shop two different times - tried on 3 dresses each time. I'm not digging their dresses, they seem tacky to me.

My problem is I need to try a variety of bridal shops - I was stuck on one in my community because I liked their alteration policy $300 cap. I have only tried on different silhouettes, but not different fabrics. I've mostly tried on lace - which is eh on me. I think I can do better.

Try different stores! I went to 3 different stores for a total of 5 shopping trips. I tried on 4-6 dresses at each one. I wanted to try one more store, but knew if I went to that store, I would be more confused because I would have a hundred more options, so I chose to not go there. I looked probably over a 3 month period.

Definitely try different stores. I went to 3 different stores in one day and tried on between 15-20 dresses. The first store, the dresses were just meh. I had much more fun trying on dresses at the second two stores. FWIW, even though my dress hasn't come in yet, the seamstress at my dress store estimated my alterations to be between $100-$200 as long as I don't need it hemmed, so you may not even need the $300 cap.

I also second trying on different styles and fabrics. I was dead set on a fitted lace style, but the consultant at the second store talked me into a fuller a-line or ballgown style. I fell in love. The dress I ended up getting does have a bit of lace on it, but it's mostly taffeta. And you have plenty of time! I just ordered my dress two weeks ago and it's estimated it will be in the store by mid-December, which will give me 6 months for alterations (it's a Wtoo by Watters dress). I wouldn't recommend trying on TOO many dresses though. My friend is getting married in July and has had 8 different dress appointments at 5 different stores in 3 different states, trying on close to 100 dresses. She has narrowed it down to 8 "favorites" that are completely different from one another. She totally has dress fatigue and it's not even fun for her anymore. I got sick of it at around the 16 dress mark, but that may have been because I knew I found the dress Smiley smile

    57. I just liked SO many of them! Finally I got tired and it wasn't fun anymore, so I just picked one.

Don't get discouraged, I know friends who have tried on far more dresses then that before finding the one. And yes there are some odd ones out there.

Personally I tried on 5 dresses at the same store and the 5th dress was the one.

Keep looking you will find it!

I really wish I would've counted. I'm told that it was around 100. I went to 7 different salons over a few weekends. I just such a hard time choosing a dress. Our dates are almost exactly a year apart- so this may help you. I first started trying on dresses Halloween weekend and didn't find my dress until the weekend before Christmas. I ordered a Justin Alexander and she arrived in mid-late May.

I tried on 4 but the dress I chose was the first one I tried on. Like the other girls say- try stuff that's outside your comfort zone. My fiances family owns a bridal salon and I walked in saying "absolutely no tulle and no bling." Well, they had just gotten back from market with a tulle ball gown with a beaded bodice that nobody had tried on yet and they were dying to see it on someone so I agreed to ONLY show them how it looked on a body.. wellllll.. guess who is walking down in the aisle in tulle & bling? THIS GIRL.

So many good tips and precious stories of finding your dresses! I'm not going to worry about alteration costs and I am going to venture out to new shops. @Kristenann your timeline helps a lot (we are almost the same date!) and puts me a little more at ease (and gives me two more months to be the fittest I can be!!) and @Jessica that is so funny ... I want tulle with a beaded bodice, haha and I will end up with something completely different probably.

Look at BHLDN.com. They've got a lot of very romantic dresses. Someone also described them as mature. I'll be 25 when we get married but I'm the youngest in our group of friends so I've never hung out with people my own age. These dresses range in price but they're all amazing! Also, when you order, you get it within 5-10 days. Most reviews I read said they didn't need alterations either.

There truly are lots of awful dresses out there! Smiley smile If you're looking for something a big more simple, have you googled Morman wedding dresses? Latterdaybride is a website with some lovely gowns...I didn't end up ordering from there, but they had some beautiful dresses.

For me, I saw my dress on the website, went in and asked to try it on, consultant thought she knew better, so I tried on about 12 dresses. She let me try mine on about number 9, and I did a couple more to humor her. I left after ordering the dress I had picked out online.

Let me share with you my dress journey of many dresses and shops.

David’s Bridal  I went here with my MOH to get a feel for dresses I liked before going shopping with my mom. I love my mother but she has an amazing ability to make me think I agree with her and after getting a grad dress I didn’t really love I wanted to make sure that didn’t happen again. I tried on about five or six dresses. Found things I liked but wasn’t really wowed by any dress.

Ethos  Shopping here was more successful. Tried on about eight to ten dresses and the last dress I tried on I fell in love with. I was sure it was my dress but my mother convinced me I had to try on more dresses still as she thought I was making the decision to quickly.

Consignment Store  Tried on about six dresses. Felt like the lady helping me was trying to get me to like dresses I had rejected and the experience was so underwhelming I have even forgotten the name of the store.

David’s Bridal  Again! This time I found a couple dresses I really liked but there was always something about them. I tried on about eight dresses.

Bridal Centre  Went here because of the huge selection as well as the fact they carried the dress from Ethos that I had loved. I tried on about fourteen to sixteen dresses I think here. I went with my young cousins as we had a blast. I tried on the previously loved dress and it ended up going head to head with another dress and lost! I walked out with an Allure 9067 and left behind my other love, Mori Lee 1964.

Overall I tried on somewhere between 35 and 50 dresses roughly. I didn’t even realize it was so many till this moment! Ha!

I tried on at least 20. Why not expand your search. I started with just lace and it wasn't doing anything for me. I think if you expand your option you'll have a better shot. Mine is the complete opposite of what I thought I wanted.

Pronably around 50, then I gave up and designed my own. Best decision ever, I feel so much better about spending that kind of cash on something I have created and is truly mine. Note I have a professional custom wedding dress maker making it, no way I could do that myself!
