How many days should the room block be?

Jazz, on December 29, 2018 at 1:42 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

Hi everyone! We are getting married in Estes Park, CO in June. It is a destination wedding. I'm currently in the process of printing our invitations, woo!!

I started thinking about our room blocks and I'm worried that I might have not blocked them for an ideal amount of time, no idea! We are getting married on a Friday. I blocked the rooms for Thursday and Friday nights. Is this enough? Should I try to extend them or let them do that themselves?

One of my biggest fears is inconveniencing our guests. That's where almost all of my stress come from! If anyone has been to Estes Park, the nearest airport in Denver so everyone will have to ride the shuttle or rent a car to get there. I'm so excited for our mountain wedding but I'm just fearful of being a horrible host lol. HELP!!!

Ours is for 2 nights, the night before and the night after. But it's also a Saturday wedding. I would probably extend it to include Saturday night if possible just to be sure your guests can have the whole weekend at the same rate.
My mom was trying to book hers through our block but it wouldn't let her because she wanted to book for Wednesday through Monday. I was like mom that's not how room block rates work!

Yeah! I think that's what trips me up, that it's a Friday wedding. I think I'll do that: extend it to Saturday as I'm sure people would like to explore on Saturday. and LOL about your mom! Haha I feel like it's confusing on our room block link too because it even lets you scroll and choose a different date, but of course it doesn't work

I LOVE Estes Park! I think adding Saturday as an option is okay but your guests can always book the room for longer if they'd like!

Omg I’m getting married in Estes next week, I can literally help you with all the things!! What’s your venue??

talk to Estes Park shuttle company, they will do transportation from a hotel to your wedding and then if you book that they will do discounted transportation from DIA to estes for your guests.

our room block was through the Blue Door Inn and they have been amazing and our guests are thrilled with how affordable they are. We blocked Thursday and Friday for our Friday night wedding, most guests are only using Friday.

if you have ANY questions let me know!

Our block is for two nights, night before and night of, because the hotel has a minimum of a 2 night reservation (at least during peak season). We’re having lots of out of town guests so we’ll probably have welcome drinks the night before since everyone in the block will be at their hotel anyway.

Whaaaa!! So excited for you! We’re actually getting married at YMCA of the Rockies so we blocked lodges there on the premises. Our ceremony and reception are at 2 different areas so we are using Estes Park Trolleys for transportation in between. Thanks for the tip about the discount though!! I really want to plan like a rehearsal dinner/welcome And I’d probably end up using the shuttle for that! I really can’t decide where I would want to hold it/doing what 😭
so so excited to hear about your wedding!!!

2 nights is fine, but I would probably extend through Saturday night so that your guests can stay the weekend and enjoy the area. It's beautiful there!

For my wedding (on a Saturday) I did 3 nights before, the night of and one night after. The vast majority of people just did the night before and the night of but there were 8-9 rooms that were booked for a few extra days. I'm pretty sure the hotel didn't hold nearly as many rooms for those extra days but they were definitely willing to honor the price for whatever the reservation was for.

Yes!!! We went in May and had a tasting! We didn’t really switch around or try many out. We just picked out 2 we thought sounded good and we ended up liking it. I think it’s the bison burgers and the chicken (something to do with sundried tomato). LOL! Sorry it’s been so long since I’ve thought about catering that I honestly can’t remember off the top of my head. Also some mustard potatoes (I hate mustard but everyone else liked it so I was for it lol) as one of the sides. Are you guys using them?!

I would probably extend yours to include Saturday night too since a lot of people would probably stay the whole weekend. Our wedding is Sunday so we reserved Friday night through Sunday night and I know the majority of the OOT guests we have spoken to are planning on coming in Friday night and leaving Monday morning, as I expected.

Having worked in hotels for about 3 years, I would always suggest keeping in contact with the hotel sales team, seeing how rooms are booking. For destination wedding/wedding where loads of people travel, I would see about shoulder dates. Maybe not the whole block of rooms, but maybe a handful a day earlier and a day later so that your guests have the option of staying longer, and most hotels will allow you to add rooms per availability. This way the rate stays the same, and no one has to worry about changing rates, or even possibly changing rooms. Just reach out to your hotel contact and they can let you know what they're able to do.

We are having a Friday wedding as well, and I only did our room block for Friday night. I wasn't really thinking about it at the time, but a fair amount of people are planning to stay Thursday too. Looking back, I should have done Thursday as well. Being that your wedding is a destination wedding, I'd consider extending the block to Saturday. But it also depends on if you think people will stay in the area for the rest of the weekend or not.
