We had two - the traditional and the groom's.

Our traditional was multi-tiered with a different flavor each tier. Our groom's cake was a tres leches cake. The tres leches was a hit - I didn't even get a piece.

    One cake.

You can be different and use cupcakes as well. I'm using both, so that the cupcakes are different flavors (german chocolate, carrot cake) for those that may like them. But it's your thang, do whatcha wanna do!

We're just doing one cake and a desert buffet. I'm not big into cake but if you are, I'd say get as many as you want as long as you have enough to feed all of your guests.

We're planning something similar to @T-Rex. We're going to have a groom's cake (probably at the RD, not sure yet) that's going to be some kind of coffee cake, his favorite is Tiramisu so I'm thinking that will surprise him. And then the wedding cake will be 4 tiers with a different flavor on each tier.

A grooms cake is by no means required.

It's a tradition. I have seen it a lot but not necessary. It's specific to something he likes or something silly for him .. since the wedding cake is usually girly and OUR cake ya know . For me it will be the opposite. My fiancé loves the Doberge cake from New Orleans. And for me I will have a king cake. Mardi Gras cake. You can do what you want !
