How many apps?

Chip, on July 30, 2017 at 9:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 48

How many varieties of apps did you pick for your cocktail hour? Our caterer suggests 5-6 different ones, I feel like that's a lot? How many did you all have? His food is amazing, and I'm sure he knows what he's talking about, I'm just curious.

I'm having 5 passed and an international cheese board during cocktail hour. The numbers will be such that each guest averages 5-6 pieces of the passed and then whatever they want from the cheese display.

We had 9 passed appetizers (the package was for 10, but we upgraded one so we had one less), and 3 displays. We had 140 people.

I think we have 3-4 passed apps and same amount of stations. I would do 5 apps if you think it's too much. Personally as a guest I love a variety of apps during cocktail hour

All our apps are passed and we have 5 varieties. If you have stationary apps, about 3 passed is fine. If you don't have any displays, 5-6 passed is good

I was told by a friend - her father was a country club manager for years - that the average guest eats 5 hors d'oeuvres per 45 minutes. Some a guest might not like, some they can't eat (i.e. nut or shellfish allergy), some they can't eat because they're vegetarians, etc., so I think offering a variety is important.

We had 10 passed hors d'oeuvres (unlimited quantities of each), a fruit tower, and a hot/cold buffet (with stations. I've seen some on "4 Weddings" that are phenomenal; more food is offered during the cocktail hours than some entire wedding receptions I've attended.

One of the worst hosted weddings I attended offered 3 passed hors d'oeuvres and we were only offered one of them. We only heard about the other two when we sat down to dinner, with other guests. I didn't like the one we were offered, but I ate it anyway. My sister couldn't eat it (I don't think any of the 3 were vegetarian) and she felt half sick, after 1 glass of wine. We assumed the venue only provided one of each type per person and the 1st guests offered them took more than one.

I believe we have 8 or 9 passed and in chafing dishes, plus a pasta station and a Tuscan Table (Italian meats, cheeses, crackers, etc.).

We are only doing 2. Fruit + chips with tropical salsa. Our cocktail hour will only be like 45 minutes with dinner immediately following so I didn't feel the need to go crazy.

Our Venue provides 6 passed apps (3 hot 3 cold) A Mediterranean Display, An Action Station (either carving or something along the lines of a mashed potato bar) and a pasta station including two kinds of pasta and sauces.

I think generally its around 5/6 passed apps but you may want to also add in a crudites display or a cheese display of some kind if that is all you're having.

Our reception venue requires a minimum of 3 appetizers, but I feel that will be plenty of variety for our guests.
