How Long Did You Wait To Start Wedding Planning After Getting Engaged?

Lisa, on January 5, 2021 at 9:51 AM Posted in Planning 1 84
It's easy to want to plan out the entire wedding as soon as you get engaged! However, not everyone starts planning right away. Some couples wait so they can spend time enjoying the engagement and sharing the news with their friends and families. Others start planning before they're actually engaged. How long after getting engaged did you wait before jumping into wedding planning? Did you start planning immediately? Did you wait a few weeks (or even a few months)? Or did you start planning before officially getting engaged?

My fiance and I intentionally waited 3-4 weeks before really talking about our budget and researching venues/vendors. We spent the first week of our engagement sharing the news with friends and family who we hadn't told yet, and the next few weeks after that casually talking about general ideas for our wedding, but also focusing on planning the next couple vacations that we had coming up. So we set wedding planning aside until after our vacations, then we hit the ground running with wedding planning!

We didn't start planning until almost three years later.

About a month before we started looking at venues, but we knew we wanted a fall wedding and dates book up fast.

We were on vacation right after he proposed so we just enjoyed ourselves and when we got home, we started planning

I tried to wait but all of my friends and family knew FH was planning to propose for about a month. So when he did my sister was ready to go and was sending me venues that night. My venue was booked by the next weekend

We waited a couple of months before we actually started planning. We got engaged, bought a house, and I started a new career last year. There was a lot going on at the beginning of the year, so we didn't really think about it until later in the year.

I knew when he was proposing and so I was loosely planning before. I started seriously planning the next day

I technically started planning before I was engaged BUT we didn't start officially planning until the day after he proposed. I'm a planner by nature so this was going to be started right away lol.

We are actively planning right now and have been for a couple of weeks and he still hasn't officially proposed yet. It will happen either this month or next month. We already have a venue and photographer booked and ideas for many other venues. We wanted to get the ball rolling because we will have a short engagement and this is just a weird time to get married so vendors are going quickly.

WELLLL, I had my whole wedding planned in my head and partially on pinterest lmao. But I didn't bring any of it up until 2 months later (got engaged Dec 2019). Actually 1 month after we chose spring of 2021 but that's it. In Feb I told FH we should go look at venues just to see what they're about. We ended up loving the first venue we saw and after visiting 2 more that same day, we called and booked. After that all the vendors started falling into place.

We started planning right away. Neither of us wanted a long engagement since we wanted to start a family and I wasn't willing to start a family until after we got married. We were engaged for 11 months and I knew venues tend to book up pretty quickly so I wanted to start looking for a venue ASAP. Within less than a month, we toured venues and decided on one. I was glad we didn't wait because the venue we picked only had two Saturdays available in the time frame we were looking at and didn't want a Friday or Sunday wedding and our time frame was limited because three of our siblings were also getting married the same year as us. I would say within three months I had every vendor booked for the wedding. The only thing I knew for sure about our wedding before we got engaged was what colors we would want. We had talked that if we ever got married we both wanted red and black. I always envisioned red roses with black tablecloths at the reception and he wanted red and black because they are the colors of his favorite hockey team. Otherwise I had no plans prior to getting engaged and our engagement came was a complete surprise. I had told him I like a ring about a year prior so he knew exactly which ring I wanted so when he decided to propose it wasn't like he dropped any hints since he knew the ring I wanted.

We always said we would elope and we picked the date before being engaged (kinda like it’d be cool to get married on that date) I didn’t know how serious he was...but he proposed 4.5 months before our desired date. So we started officially planning like 1-2 weeks after he proposed.

Dates definitely book up quickly! Especially for fall. I think a month makes sense before the planning starts! My fiance and I also waited about a month before we started touring venues.

Awesome!! Very cool that you took the rest of your vacation to enjoy the engagement before wedding planning craziness began. Did he propose right at the beginning of your vacation?

Oh wow, that is awesome that they were ready to help out right away! I feel like the venue is the biggest thing to take care of at first, so that's great that you got that booked so quickly!

We basically start right away. We wanted to wait a bit, but the family were so excited for us and kept asking for all the details. So we decided to go ahead and give them some answers!
