How late is too late...

MrsSansom, on August 24, 2017 at 12:10 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 50

Getting married June 9, 2018 and I want to know how late I could get my dress... I know I shouldn't be thinking like this, but to have the people I want there with me it is looking like sometime between late Oct to Dec before I could go shopping and I just wanted to know if this was too late.

I would go like now and find something you like so you give yourself time for the dress to come in and get altered in time. I've/seen so many brides get it last minute and it becomes a disaster. Better to be safe than sorry!

    Uh, yea.

I purchased my dress in February 2016, and it didn't come in until 8-9 months later. I guess you could get lucky purchasing something off-the-rack, but I think you're going to stress yourself out. I've heard some brides have tried on over 30 dresses.

I ordered my dress last week. They said it should 6 weeks at the MOST to arrive. And they aren't starting alterations until 2 months before.

I went 4 months before and many designers were off limits to me because I was way too close to my wedding date. My designer is based in Canada so we ordered the dress from a Toronto boutique directly and saved a ton.. it arrived in time and all was perfect. The designer is Mikaella.

Just ordered my dress last Saturday and they told me it wouldn't be in until mid February, so 6 months. Then I'll need to get it altered, because they can't make it to my exact measurements, just the closest size. I think it depends on the designer and place you get it from (I've heard davids bridal might be faster), but I'd go ASAP...

If you push the dress shopping 'til later you might have fewer options but it is definitely doable. I got engaged in March and the wedding is October so I didn't have the option of shopping more than 7 months ahead. I purchased my dress mid-April and they said it would arrive in August. The dress ended up getting here mid July.

I would go soon, like this weekend soon. I ordered mine in March and it still is not in. They said 6-8 months. I will be shocked if it takes 6 months.

I purchased my dress end of February 2017. It came end of May 2017. The expected time was July 2017.

    Please keep in mind alterations

My wedding is 6/2/18 so very close to yours. I just ordered mine last weekend. They told me that I must order it by the first week of October in order to receive it in time to have alterations done before the wedding. Mine will arrive in January and then I will go back in March for my first fitting and then again in May for my final fitting. They build in a little extra time in case something goes wrong with shipping or I need extra alterations. I am sure that the timeline differs slightly depending on the designer but I would highly recommend that you order asap. You can always have your friends and family return with you for a fitting or just make an appointment one weekend to go try it on again for them.

Wedding twin! I have mine, but it wasn't planned. I was just trying to figure it what style and narrow it down to a few, then shop around I fell in love and it was over. Lol

    We're date twins!!!

I have my dress already, but I was lucky to find it on sample. Honestly, a big entourage can create a terrible dress shopping experience, so I would definitely be careful with trying to include a ton of people. I waited until my mom could come with me, and we bought my dress that day. I only had my mom and one of my bridesmaids.

Unless you're 100% okay with buying a sample or buying off the rack, I would DEFINITELY not wait until December. You may end up paying way more to rush your dress, and then you will still probably need alterations.

I orders mine in June from DB and it's already sitting in my closet. I think it took about six weeks to come in but they quoted me 3 months.

I think it depends on where you buy... I bought my dress at the end of July from David's Bridal and I picked it up last weekend. I couldn't believe how quickly it came in! I agree with others though, you might be limiting your options if you wait. Maybe you could reach out to the specific store that you'll be buying from and ask what their typical time frame is?

That's hard to say because different people will tell you different things. I purchased my dress early October 2016 from David's Bridal (which was totally unplanned, I didn't think I'd find a dress that day!) So 11 months before the wedding. They didn't have my size at the time, but it only took 3 weeks max to get it in. I had heard suggestions of 7-9 before the wedding, by the latest.

However, you've got to take into account alterations as well. I did part of my alterations with David's Bridal and a seamstress currently has my dress for the remaining alterations. David's Bridal took a month to hem my dress and bustle it. The seamstress has had my dress for two weeks so far, but that's because a lot of last-minute August brides gave her their dresses to alter. I was obviously totally fine with her working on those dresses before mine since I have til the end of September lol.

It depends on where you go. Some places allow you to buy off the rack, and you want to make sure to leave at least 3 months for alterations.

I would go right away. My dress took 6 months to come in, and it came in early! The longer you wait the more limited you will be

I am getting married 5/27/18 and just started my search. I think I found the one.... but they basically said I need to order very soon! I am not sure if it's the particular designer I like , but they said factories are closed in December and January!!

    I would start very soon!

Depending on where you go, wedding dresses can take an average of 6 months to come in after you've ordered it. This means some dresses do take longer than 6 months to arrive. You also need to make sure your dress arrives 2 months before your wedding date because 2 months prior to your wedding is when seamstresses typically start alterations. You probably also want to allocate a couple extra months in case your dress takes longer than the average time to come in.

At minimum, I'd say go order 9 months in advance. That would mean early September for you.

You could consider shopping now and then making an appointment with the dress shop where you order a few months later to try on the sample of the dress you ordered for the people you wished could have been there for the actual finding of the dress.
