How far is too far for a reception?

Nicolette, on July 17, 2015 at 6:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

My MOH and i were discussing this. What would you consider as being too far for the reception? For example, an hour away. I believe that that's edging a little too far but still doable and she believes its ridiculous to ask guests to go an hour away and believe the reception site should be less than ten minutes away.

Opinions?

I wouldn't want to drive any further than 15 to 30 mins if it were me.

I have driven more than an hour away to a wedding, even flown to different states. However, if the ceremony and reception are at a different location, definitely no more than 30 minutes.

I think the proper etiquette rule is no more than 30 minutes. I would go off that and try to keep the distance down. Unless there is a really good reason to have it far apart, for whatever reason, the closer the better.

We have driven out of state for weddings before but no one should have to drive more than 30 minutes from the ceremony to the reception.

We drove 45-60 mins to my brother's reception site from the ceremony. Then there was cocktail hour after that...it was a very long hour. It would have been better to have a 30 min cocktail hour

Only once I had to drive pretty far between the ceremony and the reception. It was worth it. The reception was at a gorgeous venue in Philadelphia.

I definitely agree with what everyone else has said. I would just be annoyed if I was asked to drive 30 minutes from ceremony to reception

I think that if you can make then closer together you should try- but if you can't, then you can't.

why are they so far apart? would the reception site make for a nice place to have the ceremony? just a thought Smiley smile

More than 10 minutes is annoying (it's always more with traffic), and I think anything over 20 min is unreasonable. But it also will depend on whether you live in a rural area where people are used to driving 40 minutes to the nearest store or a city.

If the WHOLE event is an hour away, fine. But if you want people to drive an hour between the ceremony and reception - nope.

My sister's reception venue was an hour from the ceremony and everyone complained to me about it. I thought it was too far as well and am having everything at the same place so it's not a hassle for my guests! I think 15 min or less unless you're in a big city where 15 minutes will get you five blocks like I'm used to!

I think it depends on the general area 10 -30 minutes would be the most you could expect your guests to travel between ceremony and reception. If someone asked me to drive 10 miles in LA traffic, I would complain a lot and probably be late.

For me, anything over 30 minutes is too far.

My reception venue is 25-30 min away from the Church we're getting married in. I wanted a fairly close reception venue to save time, be easier on guests, and also people will be HUNGRY lol Im not sure if I'd say 1 hour is too long... it would definitely be a little annoying unless the reception venue would be closer to home for most guests.. then it could be okay since people will have had to drive back anyway. My cousin is doing that and we're all kind of annoyed by it... getting married in a Church 1 - 1.5 hours from home and then reception 15 min away from home back up here. We will be driving regardless though.
