How Far Away is Your Venue?

I'm having SUCH a hard time nailing down a reception venue. I'll admit, I am probably being annoying picky. But I just don't LOVE any of the venues I've seen. A lot of them are super restrictive or the look of it is just bleh. I've only looked at venues that are about 10-15 miles from where we live...

I'm having SUCH a hard time nailing down a reception venue. I'll admit, I am probably being annoying picky. But I just don't LOVE any of the venues I've seen. A lot of them are super restrictive or the look of it is just bleh. I've only looked at venues that are about 10-15 miles from where we live (and about 5-10 miles from the church); however, I'm thinking of looking into neighboring cities. I don't live in a big city; however, I do live about 3 hours south from Chicago. And there are so many beautiful venues there; however, that would require all my guests to travel & we obviously couldn't have our ceremony at FH's childhood church (which is the one thing he has said means a lot to him - even though neither of us are overly religious. I think he's doing it more for his g-parents).

So, how far away is your venue from your house? (miles or travel time)

AND

Are you having the ceremony there too? If not, how far away is the reception venue from the church?

I live on Long Island and am getting married in Brooklyn. (About 45-60 minutes away from home). However we have guests coming from Brooklyn, Long Island, Miami, Manhattan, Seattle, Oakland, Austin and New Jersey, so location wasn't so critical to be near home.

I had a hard time to since I was very specific about not wanting a catering hall or ballroom. I was also very limited since we are having approx. 70-75 and we were too small for a lot of places and too large for some restaurants. We wanted dancing and in NYC that rules out most restaurants since there is an outdated law that venues must hold a cabaret license to allow dancing and most NYC restaurants do not. Fortunately, I found a place in Brooklyn that is a 3 story loft-like space with old wood floors and exposed brick, stained glass windows that was perfect for our size party and included catering, linens, some decor and a DJ. Score!

I live in Kentucky, my FH lives in Maryland, and we're getting married in Virginia! I'm the only one in Kentucky so I'm getting married near most of our family and friends… ceremony and reception are about 20 minutes apart.

We're about 15 minutes away from our church, and the ceremony and reception are in the same place.
