How do I grow my hair as long and healthy as possible in 14 months??

Tabitha, on April 19, 2011 at 4:25 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 36

I have a bit longer than shoulder length hair and it was always mid back length prior to a few years ago. I've always wanted long curls on my wedding day but don't know how the heck I will grow it out before my June 2012 wedding date. I was told to get 1/2 inch trims every 3 months but my hair doesn't grow very fast. I am trying to avoid extentions if at all possible but I don't want to put anything on/in my hair if it will weaken it. I do not die, blow dry, or put products in my hair now so it is very healthy. Please help with any ideas, it will be much appreciated!! Thanks

Hair will grow about an inch a month. I'd get baby hair trims every 8 weeks to keep it strong. Waiting 3 months is too long, more so as your hair gets longer. You can get less than a 1/2 inch trimmed off each time though.

Hair and Mane brand, horse shampoo you can get at the grocery store, can help keep your hair strong. You only need to use it once or twice a week. Many companies have long hair formulas now, so I'd pick one up. And make sure you use a good conditioner, just don't use too much. I think a monthly deep conditioning treatment can help you as well.

#1. You can try prenatal vitamins, good diet, lots of water

#2, don't dye your hair, don't blow dry your hair, don't curl your hair... keep away from heat and chemicals.

#3. Get a good shampoo - Garnier Frutis long and strong shampoo

My last advise is to trim your split ends

    - I once read this interesting way to DIY. If you hair is long enough, take a handful of hair, twist your hair. You will notice little hairs stick out of the twist. If you look close you can see if they are split ends. Take some sharp scissors and just cut the split end. This is a way to try to keep your split ends under control and not loose any length. The reason people always say their hair doesn't grow is because their ends break off.

That is all my hair, and people always ask me what I do.

I started using a protein shampoo and conditioner - this brand, http://www.sallybeauty.com/damaged-hair-treatment/ION25,default,pd.html - about two months ago and it's made a huge difference in how my hair looks and feels. That being said, the best way to grow your hair strong and healthy is having the right nutrients. B vitamins are good for your hair (and heart) and Omega 3 fatty acids, getting plenty of water...there's more I just can't think of them at this moment, but you can go to a health food store and most of the vitamins that are good for your hair will list it right on the label. The person working there should be able to help you too. On the flip side of the coin, the wrong diet can keep your hair from growing as fast and shiny and healthy as it should. Hair takes a lot of energy to grow, so make sure you're getting enough sleep Smiley smile

Notice how she has her scissors turned.. you are not cutting across the twist.. you are not taking length off. The point is to just cut the little split ends that stick our of the twist.

2nd picture is what NOT TO DO!

3rd shows the hair in a twist and you can see the little hairs sticking out.

I'm having the same issue...want long hair for my June wedding. My problem is that my hair is naturally super curly and therefore dry. Thanks for all the good tips! I'm definitly gonna buy that Ion shampoo! I love their conditioner packets at Sally =)

I would get some hair. skin, nail vitamins from a local vitamin store. I used them after a really bad haircut and my hair grew back amazingly fast. They work great!

Get yourself the vitamins, shampoo, conditioning treatments, and regular trims... you will look like the girl in Tangled in no time!

My hair dresser told me I had dry hair and suggested that I only get it wet and wash it every other day, which has helped, a lot. I have also heard for really dry curly hair you should condition it every day and wash it once a week. I also think its salic acid that you don't want in your shapoo.

This may sound wacky but if you talk to your doctor about getting on prenatal vitamins your hair and nails will grow very fast. When I work at the salon I recommend it to everyone. The only downside-it will make ALL hair grow fast, so expect to shave your legs everyday.

Your hair grows on average 1/2 inch a month so do the math and calculate how long your hair will be by that time. take vitamins because will help. trimming and conditioning treatments are great but they aren't necessarily going to make your hair grow any faster, they are just going to keep your hair healthy which you definitely want. but you might have to give in and get extensions. hehe the only class in high school that i did good in was cosmetology.

Oh and i DO NOT recommend trying to cut your own hairs, even just the split ends. there's a lot of experienced hairstylists who wouldn't even cut their own hair. chances are you aren't going to invest in quality shears(makes a difference-i promise) and won't really know how to work them(it's not like using scissors) and should you make a wrong move, then you have to go get your hair cut anyways which would take off length you didn't want taken off.

I all the time want long hair and then break down and cut it. I can't help it! I would like mine long, but a couple months is NOT going to make that happen without extensions. I think these ladies have great advice though!

Just by the way: My name is Tabbatha too! Spelling is a little different, but it's the same name! AND... you signed off short and sweet... which is part of my email address 'cause I'm pretty short.

I have been getting mine minimally trimmed every 10-12 weeks but am having to cut down on blow drying and straightning to keep it in good condition. Luckily my hair is naturally curly so I can leave it to dry itself with mousse in it. I have successfully grown mine to be bra strap length from shoulder length in approx 12 months!

Make SURE you take the advice of Hayley and that your stylist understands that she is only to trim off the split ends (just a teeny bit) and not more than half an inch. This was a big mistake I made over and over when trying to grow out my hair. Stylists told me that trimming my hair regularly will make it grow faster. Unfortunately they would always trim more than it would grow before the next trim therefore my hair NEVER grew out and I would get so ticked off about it. Now when I get it trimmed, I just have a teeny tiny bit off, literally TINY BIT, and now it grows very well.

You're actually not supposed to take prenatal if you're not pregnant. The does of iron in them is meant for two people. Too much iron can harm you. That's what the doc told me anyhow.

    I try EVERYTHING, lol.

I shampoo every other day, and I condition daily.

I rinse with cold water to seal the hair cuticle.

I try to wear my hair natural every other day or every few days to prevent heat damage.

    I take vitamins.

I get trims every 8-12 weeks.

    My hair grows SO slow.

@Hayley: You have such beautiful hair.

I suggest taking prenatal vitamins. I'm taking them (but I'm pregnant) and my hair is growing pretty fast. It's really healthy , but I've also stopped dying my hair (since last October), I do blow dry my hair on occasion. If you must blow dry it it's actually better to blow dry your hair on high b/c it doesn't take as long. (less time with the heat).

I also shampoo my hair every 1-2 days and condition it at least 4 times a week.

They have (in the vitamin section) stuff that takes (what I think is) carotene out of pre-natals and it's just for your hair, and nails. That way you don't get the extra stuff that only a mommy-to-be needs.

I would recommend taking prenatal vitamins, 1 biotin tablet, and 1 vitamin E tablet a day. I started doing this 2 months ago and I could see the difference in my hair, skin, and nails.

I have definitely heard that prenatal vitamins are not recommended unless you are pregnant. The iron and the B vitamins comes in too high a dose for a woman who is not pregnant.
