How did your menu tasting go?

FH and I went to our venue's (hotel, in house catering only) restaurant for our "menu tasting". Well, all it ended up being is us going to the restaurant, like we would any other, and ordering off their dinner menu. Don't get me wrong, what we ordered was delicious, and it was a very expensive, quality meal that we got for free. It was still appreciated. However, the menu was nothing like our menu for our wedding. I've seen the wedding catering menu, and nothing off their restaurant menu is on the wedding menu. The coordinator said it's more so we can just see the quality of the food, which again, was great. I guess I just expected to actually be tasting the things we might be offering for our guests, so we can decide what exactly we want to have. Honestly, I'm mostly just concerned with the hors o'douevres, since we *mostly* know what we want for our dinner. I'm not sure if this is the way tastings are normally done, so maybe I'm wrong. How did yours go?

Tastings should offer the food you're serving! Can you call and ask if you can sample the actual food? Including hors d'oeuvres?

And our food tasting was last weekend and it went amazing! We got to pick 4, and for our final choice we picked this stuffed scrod just to pick a 4th, and it was the most amazing! So delicious!!!!!!!! So it became our top choice, with either an Angus or a sirloin. Score for tastings! Lol

We are getting married at an Inn. We had a tasting a few weeks ago. They set us up a small table in front of a fireplace with 2 glasses of champagne. We tasted everything that was going to be on our menu on the wedding day - then the chef came out and wanted to know if we wanted anything changed. I think he was disappointed when we said we wouldn't change a thing!

I'm so excited for my guests to try the food here! That's what really made me realize this was the perfect place for us - we are only having 25 guests, but they still treat us like we're spending/bringing more.

Out venue owner also owns a restaurant. So, we did our tasting at her restaurant, and we got to pick things from either the catered menu,

Or the restaurant menu. We ended up doing a mix of them for our actual reception.

Things that I knew I liked - I'm glad we tasted since some of them weren't what we actually wanted. The Caesar salad (a favorite of FH and mine) was weird, and the stuffed mushrooms weren't how we like them - so we changed them a bit for the wedding

I would be very concerned if I didn't get to taste any food I was having at my actual wedding

Hmm that's odd, we tried most of the food they offer for weddings, actually we didn't try anything that was an option for our wedding

That's odd. The head chef came out with a filet, chicken, and salmon, along with about 7 side dishes, and some toppings. He asked us what we would like to combined, plated it in front of us, and served it. It was nice because we felt like we were involved in creating our menu. We were able to choose 2 entrees.

As a wedding venue that requires catering be done through us, this sounds strange. Wedding tastings are meant to not only test the quality of food, but also narrow down the menu you want to offer your wedding guests. Also, in our restaurant, it is not the same people cooking for events as it is in the every day restaurant.

I would politely voice your concerns with the coordinator that while your dinner was great in the restaurant, it didn't help with choosing your menu for your event. Ask if there is a way to sample any of the wedding menu items that you are on the fence about ordering.

This happened to me. I felt it was weird but I guess was my fault for not clarifying my expectations

That is weird indeed. Our venue is the restaurant and we were already told that we select off the wedding menu. In fact I was able to ask if we would be ordering off the fall/winter menu or the upcoming spring/summer and they will let me know once the chef decides.

We are allowed 3 appetizers, 3 entrees and 2 desserts to taste.

Uh, that's very weird. You should have been able to taste the items that you would/could serve at your wedding.

Nope you should be tasting what you are potentially serving to guests

Our tasting was an invite only event with other couples using our venue. We sent in an RSVP with what we would like to try, they chose some salads and appetizers for us to try. I would feel strange not being able to taste what my guests would be eating. We specifically changed our mind on one dish due to how it tasted.

My planner/bff and her FH went to my tasting for me and the lady brought store bought food, bland and burnt and admitted to buying store bought fried chicken for other weddings!!

I found the tasting at my venue to be odd but it wasn't like that. They do tastings the first Saturday of every month. You call the week of and pick 4 things from their catering menu. Then pick it up early afternoon that Saturday and they have it in a to-go box for you to take with you. One of our 4 entree choices was Chicken Parmesan which was the #1 entree we wanted to put on the menu. The coordinator must of heard me wrong and wrote down "chicken paradise" instead of chicken parm... it was just a plain piece of grilled chicken breast that was so boring.... and we aren't allowed to have another tasting to try it again in the future. they also wouldn't let us try the beef options because they are denoted as an extra charge than everything else... I was like... uhmmm you want us to spend more money on something we can't even try beforehand? The food was good but I was turned off by the whole process of it.
