How did your menu tasting go?

Dani, on February 9, 2017 at 12:21 AM Posted in Planning 0 33

FH and I went to our venue's (hotel, in house catering only) restaurant for our "menu tasting". Well, all it ended up being is us going to the restaurant, like we would any other, and ordering off their dinner menu. Don't get me wrong, what we ordered was delicious, and it was a very expensive, quality meal that we got for free. It was still appreciated. However, the menu was nothing like our menu for our wedding. I've seen the wedding catering menu, and nothing off their restaurant menu is on the wedding menu. The coordinator said it's more so we can just see the quality of the food, which again, was great. I guess I just expected to actually be tasting the things we might be offering for our guests, so we can decide what exactly we want to have. Honestly, I'm mostly just concerned with the hors o'douevres, since we *mostly* know what we want for our dinner. I'm not sure if this is the way tastings are normally done, so maybe I'm wrong. How did yours go?

That's weird to me. Tastings should offer the food you'll be serving.

That was my thought? Like, I trust them that anything we choose will be great. But at the same time, it would have been nice to try the actually wedding menu items.... it just makes more sense to me.

That is odd, all the tastings that we have gone to have been a sampling of the potential menu for the wedding. I don't know if I would be comfortable booking them for my wedding if I had been in a similar situation to you.

ALS, that's kind of what I'm concerned about. But at the same time, while the food we ordered was really good, we're both notoriously picky eaters...to be honest, we ordered the only two things on the menu that even sounded good. It's one of those fancy, limited menu, no substitutions places lol. Our wedding menu will be much simpler and catering to our family of equally picky eaters with assorted dietary restrictions. So I feel like it can't be that hard to make good, simple food.

We are doing our tasting about a month before the wedding. They make a buffet style dinner with many options and invite a group of couples who are booked. We can request certain items.

FutureMrsP, the venue is already booked, and they don't allow outside catering, so we're kinda stuck. I really am trying to stay positive about it. The experience was just odd to me.

June Bride, we actually visited another venue that did that. I thought that was a much better set up. (But that was about the only good thing they offered, which is why we didn't book with them)

For our meal tasting we had to choose from the wedding menu. We had it in the hotel restaurant and it certainly made a difference in what we chose

It sounds off to me. All of the menu tastings at hotels where I've worked has been sampling the actual banquet menu. I would express your concerns with your sales manager and have her set up an actual menu tasting.

We did the exact type of tasting. Only the dessert for our wedding was also on the restaurants dinner menu so we tried it. We tried a steak (will be seasoned differently at the wedding) and it was excellent. We aren't worried about not having tasted the actual dishes mainly because it's a venue and restaurant with a very good rep. We also didn't have a single blah bite the entire night. Think positive. If your experience at the restaurant was good, have faith they'll make your wedding catering just as good.

Ours is in house caterer only as well. We had a private tasting and we were able to choose 3 entrees, 2 veggies, and 2 starches to try. I wish we could have tried hors d'ouvers but it wasn't offered in the tasting so we just picked what sounded good.

The Right Lane, I *kind of* did. I had emailed her today prior to the tasting asking what would be on the tasting menu, and she said that the chef doesn't do individual appetizers for tasting. She told us how the tasting worked, so i wasn't completely blindsided. I just don't want to be "that" bride that's demanding special treatment just so I can taste some mini quiche. Obviously I wouldn't actually demand it, but you know what I mean?

For our tasting, we got to pick two first course plates and two entrées to sample off the list of options for the wedding menu. We were served six random appetizers of the chef's choosing and we had no control over whether they were any of the appetizers we were actually considering for our wedding.

The place my sister was married at was a restaurant/wedding venue . It's called mill on the river . They're known for their food so I guess my sister wasn't nervous .

Our tasting was an awesome experience. Our venue hosts two big tasting sessions a year. Our session included passed hors d'oeuvres, different food stations, and a buffet. It was reflective of 75% of the menu selection for the wedding.

In the end, it's not like I can really do much about it. I love everything else about the venue. And I'm sure the food will be great. I was just wondering if this was the norm. Thank you, everyone for your posts (:

All tastings I've ever heard of (from family members) had tastings of the potential items to be served on the day of the event.

The tasting should be potential menu items. Our vendor's wife owns a restaurant and I was nervous at first because I've had bland and unappetizing food at weddings before. The food was amazing! We all unanimously agreed on the meal. They let us sample different dishes and pick which ones we wanted for the main course and side items.

Our venue is in a restaurant. We went two weeks ago. Brought my parents and FH parents (we were allowed 6 total). We are having a buffet, so we were allowed to pick 4 entrees to try. Each one they brought out was a a full sized entree and each one had a side from their buffet menu. We also had a basket of bread. We split the entrees 6 ways which gave us all a taste (and more since there were some things some people don't eat).
