How did you save for the big day?

Sammie, on September 8, 2017 at 7:36 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 29

We're thinking of using a joint savings account. Any other tips? Or smart ways to save money?

I set up a whole separate account just for the wedding where I put a certain percentage of my paycheck in there every month based on the estimated cost of my wedding. When it came time to pay all the bills, I ran my credit card through for everything to get airline miles and then paid off the credit card bill right away with what was in the bank account.

Rented out a room in our house for $900/month. All that money went into a separate account just for the wedding. Smiley smile It looks like we'll have about $5k left over if all goes according to plan, so if that happens we'll be looking at new carpet for our bedrooms as a wedding gift to ourselves lol.

First thing I did when I got engaged was cancel my cable. It was so expensive and the only show I watch on there is The Walking Dead. Smiley smile

Obviously that won't pay for my wedding, but it's a start!

I second canceling cable. Also FH has been trying his best not to buy any movies. He is a movie fanatic and spends way too much purchasing movies!

We're using a savings account, but also using the app Qapital, to assign certain things, certain amounts (i.e. photographer, DJ), so we can break out the money we need for each thing and don't blow it on something else. You can transfer it all to your bank account when you have enough, and can set up different "rules" to save automatically. I highly recommend it!

Also, just in general, we have been going out less, and just been more conscious of our frivolous spending!

I signed up for the Digi.co app. It saves automatically for you and It defintely helped out for some extra cash. I emptied it out right before wedding and then started up the day after our wedding! In a little less than six months I have saved $2,500! You can set up a goal for it to save to, too!

We are saving as we go. I make $30,000 more a year than FH. I'm personally paying for 90% of the wedding.

We got a joint account and everything came out of that. Every month I put in a set amount from every paycheck to the fund via direct deposit. We will just adjust the amount after we are married and take all the bills out of that account.

We are paying cash for everything.

I have been using Digit and Qapital since they were in beta and highly recommend them. Also using Mint to track my budget and making decisions as when to send money into my separate savings account has helped a lot. I teach high school and any money from the extracurricular activities I have had directly deposited into a separate savings account. This is just how I'm building my savings in general but, I'm sure it can all he applied to saving for a special event, as well.

    1. cut cable, phone service, data plans

    2. cut the gym you don't go to

    3. stop going out for dinner/lunch/coffee every morning/ordering takeout

    4. get friendly with your library for books and movies

    5. don't shop recreationally

    6. re-evaluate your car leases

    7. set up a reoccuring withdrawl through smarty pig or digit.co

    8. pay yourself first.

    9. charge everything on a miles or rewards card and pay it off right away (great for your credit rating too)

    10. get a side gig cater-waitering, tutoring, mystery shopping, driving, pet sitting

I paid off my student loans before we started planning this way we weren't ignoring more important outstanding debts. Now, joint account with % of paycheck

TBH we had been saving a lot before we got engaged. We're also pretty frugal with most things (except eating out, which we're cutting back on haha). I also was able to pay off my car, which meant a lot more money per month to spend on wedding payments.

Budget budget budget. Goodwill or Facebook Marketplace are great ways to save for things you may need. Side hustle for sure.

I like to think of our union as a business; always try to be in the black.

We opened an account with the money we got for our engagement party and then we used the account only for the wedding. Had a 2 year engagement and put saved our income tax money for the wedding only. It was really easy. Whatever we couldn't afford we didn't get. I found vendors in my budget

We set up a joint account very early on and both put in the same every week, sometimes FH would throw in more. We also extended the engagement to accommodate everything.

Ally.com is an all online bank. You can make multiple accounts and savings accounts interest is 1.2% which sounds like peanuts but starts to add up. We set a goal and out in a flat rate per paycheck to add and negotiated changes as needed. We both have access to the account and watching it grow only makes up more excited to add. Look at the places you can spin sorting, be it cable or daily lattes or something else.

We cut down on a few frivolous expenses (ordering in, housekeeping twice a month, cable, etc), but I have been working extra shifts to pay the bulk of it. I may have to do 1 to 2 more months of shifts to pay the rest off, but I got a no interest credit card for the remaining purchases as recommended by my financial advisor that I will easily be able to pay off before interest starts to rack up. The cc thing was not something I had thought of or wanted to do, but it made sense.

We planned very far ahead and just pay for certain things as the money comes up and we have extra of it. So far so good

We opened a joint account and will only use it for wedding stuffs until after the wedding. I'm having my entire paycheck from my second job deposited there every week. FH will be adding extra money monthly and his yearly bonus as well as our tax returns will go in there.

I got a promotion at work.

Since FH covers the majority of the house bills, with a few exceptions, we decided not to rework the budget. Instead of splitting bills more evenly, all the extra money I made went straight into the wedding.

Since my overtime essentially disappeared, he picked up extra shifts here and there, to pay for the venue and his tux.
