How did you mail your invites?

Chesty LaRue, on June 6, 2011 at 11:29 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

Im sending out my invites this week and would like to have all the invites out by Friday. I was wondering if it is worth the money to Hand Cancel my invites? Also did everyone go to the post office to send their invites or is it ok just to drop them in the mailbox?

My post office wouldn't stamp mine, they just sold me the stamps. And an FYI, each took two stamps!

I put all mine in a box, and shipped them off to the Post Office in Bridal Veil, Oregon to be hand canceled. They have two special cancellation stamps (shown below), and you can specify whether you want the one with hearts or the one with doves. Here is a link to details on how to do it.

I purchased 65 cent stamps and plan to just drop them off at the post office.

If your invitations are thicker than normal or have anything "bumpy" in them like a ribbon, it is best to have them hand canceled since those kinds of things can get caught in the automated machinery. But if they are fairly flat, you should be fine to just drop them off at the post office. I would still give them to the postal worker instead of putting them in a mailbox though.

2nd what a cute idea. If I was not mailing boxed invitations or lived closer to Oregon, I would certainly do that. But the website has great information.

Ok, this may sound dumb, but what is Hand Cancel? I've never dealt with or heard of it

I bought $0.64 stamps. I dropped the majority of them off at the post office, but the few stragglers went out of my own mailbox. My mail carrier and I are quite close (she brings me all sorts of presents, I let her use my potty and give her a bottle of cold water to take with her).

If a post office doesnt have enough of a particular stamp you are looking for, you can order it online (post office's website) and they only charge you $1 shipping fee. i did that and got my stamps within 2days (they shipped from KS)

so if you know how much postage you need and want a particular stamp you could prob get them in the mail by friday if you ordered them online today?

Hand Canceling was over $1 each my invites were able to mail with just a 44 cent stamp I couldn't justify the price for the hand canceling and really your guests will not care. Its completely something you do for yourself.

My invites only cost $.44 to ship and we did not get them hand canceled because our post office said they can't do that. None of them were damaged so it didn't matter anyway. But we just had a panel invite with no ribbon or embellishment.
