Horror stories

Quinn, on August 25, 2016 at 10:17 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

Last night I read a wedding article about brides who send guests that RSVPed but couldn't make it for whatever reason, a bill to pay to cover the costs of the plates and favors for them!!! I couldn't believe it! So I'm curious to hear what horrible wedding stories you all have heard or experienced!!

As much as I'd like to say something to the people that didn't show, I won't. Besides, they actually had good reasons: bronchitis & SBIL & his GF broke up the week of the wedding.

Yikes I heard about that as well! My parents went to a wedding once where they were asked to bring a lasagna (wtf!). They ran a few minutes late to the reception (DRY RECEPTION) because they were drinking in the parking lot. Turns out the lasagna WAS THE FOOD. Like all of the food. FOR EVERYONE. My step-mom was so pissed! She had no idea, she thought a bunch of people were bringing stuff!

So (1) potluck (2) dry wedding (3) ALL THE FOOD WAS ONE LASAGNA

Once DH and I had 2 weddings in a weekend so we had to travel for one on Saturday and stayed at a hotel and drove back Sunday for the other wedding.

July (in Alabama), in the middle of no where, outdoor ceremony and reception and it was dry.

    We left after the ceremony.

Not really a horror story but more something kinda funny.

When my parents got married (1999) they did the disposable camera thing (putting disposable cameras on all the tables for guests to use/take pictures). Instead of "guests" getting ahold of them me (8 yrs old at the time) and my brothers and cousins ran around taking pictures of the most random things. I'm talking pictures of a door or a random persons shoe. Needless to say when my mom developed them all she could do was laugh. She was very thankful that she had a photographer at the ceremony though!

@remdgmllionaire , 70 people and one lasagna. How well did that work out? Did she ever get her pan back? Was the bride super ticked off that she didn't bring a plate of 15 lasagnas?

I guess I should contribute, though I haven't seen a lot of bad in the three or so weddings I've been to.

My one friend's dry Sunday afternoon wedding only had Contra and Renaissance dancing. That was a little eh, since I wouldn't have minded kicking loose to something from this millennia. My one friend's complaint from that wedding was that the staff had cut the watermelon slices without properly cleaning the knife so there was the taste of onion from other prep work. I couldn't tell, so I didn't mind.

My (co)MOH has a semi-self-catered reception. Her H's aunt insisted on renting their clubhouse for the wedding, and making food ahead of time for it. Guests were asked to bring in plates of food. As my friends had no money, and much of this was being forced upon them by the H's family who raised him, they went along with it. There was lots of alcohol, and they had the main point of the event, being married and sharing the vows before family and friends. She admits, three years later, that it was a shitshow, but they're still together and happy, which is more than some people with perfect picture days get.

Yikes! My mom still tells the story of their wedding weekend. There was a gas shortage, so her step-father was filling barrels with gasoline the week up to the wedding. They called all their guests to say they totally understood if they couldn't make it, but if they could make it TO the wedding they could give them enough gas to get back home! So crazy

That seems to be a growing trend in general for parties. There were those two instances in the news I remember in the last couple years for kids birthday parties. The no-shows were charged. Ridiculous.

@remdgmllionaire I hope that was one BIG lasagna!

My friend (I participated in this wedding), had all of us bridesmaids come to her house and make all of the decorations and come to the venue like 7 hours early and DECORATE THE WHOLE PLACE. We were moving chairs and tables and hanging stuff from the ceiling. This isn't even the bad part. It was a dry wedding with no food at around 4 p.m. She had every single guest bring a dessert and had a dessert bar. Also she had no one in charge of music and us BM's were walking down the aisle to her song and she has to walk down the aisle with no music. It was a disaster. SO basically it was a DIY wedding, with no food, BYO Dessert and no alcohol.

Catholic Church wedding that started 2 hours late but no one was allowed to leave because the bride might show up any moment. Two hours long religious ceremony.

The reception venue charged $10 for parking in a huge empty parking lot.

Cash bar at cocktail hours, no apps/hor. They even charged $2 for non alcoholic drinks, $1 for water.

Bride sang a really long song (5 mins)

Each toasts was as long as 10 mins.

Finally got served a plated meal of one piece of chicken (really dry) and one piece of potato.

Two vegetarians at my table left before the dinner end. The dancing started after dinner. Bride and groom danced, bride and her father danced, bride and mother danced, bride and her brother danced, bride sang again...you get the point...I was exhausted to care at that point.

It was my ex's cousin wedding and the best part was a fb message a week later. They spent $50K on the wedding and did not get enough money gifted back. They were asking extended family to contribute more as they were in debt.

I am still salty about it five years later!! Lol

My cousin's fiancé has been telling us for months they'll be sending bills to anyone who RSVPs and don't show up.

There was also a mention of "cash bar during dinner" I need to ask about it, but was waiting until a moment where I didn't have smoke coming out of my ears...

She also managed to push her cousin, and MOH, out of the wedding entirely. The cousin's parents won't even be coming to the wedding.

It's been so dramatic and I can't wait until it's over.
