A little back story.
When I purchased my dress I went to a David's bridal in Manhattan.
They squeezed me into a size 18. And suggested I get into a 20. I mentioned that I started working out and plan on shedding some weight for the wedding. They said "okay that's good but they can always take it in a size" so me being naive I just went with it.
Well fast foward 3 months later, today I had my dress fitting in the David's bridal in queens. and they had to take it in so much but i didn't give me any shape, I looked like a rectangle. And I'm a plus size girl and very self conscious about my body, plus I added sleeves and a ugly bustle that I didn't not like so the total of the alterstujns came out to 700 and my dress cost a little over 800.
I had a bridezilla moment and started crying and staring that I felt that they tricked me into getting a size 20 so I would have to do all these alterations and pay all this money.
I told them I dont mind paying for a service but having to pay almost the same price for my dress bc it's too big bc they insisted on a certain size was unfair.
So they now said they will exchange my dress from a 20 to a 18. And expected delivery date is June 17. My wedding is July 3.
I'm super nervous, upset and a bunch of negative emotions.
Now I'm nervous that I'll have to be charged extra for rush free and just feel that I was completely uneducated on bridal shopping.
I wish I knew better.

    It's ridiculous!
I wish I knew better and put my foot down

It's upsetting ti see how much $$ they will try to get out of customers.
I am tempted and considering taking it elsewhere but I'm afraid of what will happen it someone else runs it.

My new dress size will come in 2 weeks before my wedding, no room for mistakes. 🙈

That’s exactly where I am. The woman who does my dry cleaning locally said she could do it for under $200 but if she messes it up I’m just up a creek. She’s also been in business for generations so her shop has a musty smell and I’m scared even if my dress turns out fine it will stink. The dress they ordered actually fits me worse than the sample dress did. It’s horrible that they do that knowing exactly what sort of situation they’re getting you into.

Our wedding isn’t until October 2020 and David’s Bridal is about 2 hours from me. I thought about calling to see what they could do or would recommend at least. If all else fails and it’s really expensive to take in I’ll take it to the local woman and just give it plenty of time to air out. She’s done quite a few dresses for me for my FH’s events but there’s just some sort of extra worry with your wedding dress. I hope your dress turns out for you!

I don’t think it’s a scam, the David’s bridal I went to was completely different. There were only two sizes they brought me to try on in different dresses, when I decided on the dress i think it was ordered in the size I tried on, but when I went back to pick it up it was way too big, the salesgirl was very helpful, and said I would be better off if they ordered the smaller size and I wouldn’t have to do the alterations.. she looked and saw that the smaller size was available at the warehouse and even suggested I go for petite because it was too long, even with heels, she even brought the seamstress out to confirm. So, at no charge they ordered a new dress, when I finally went back to pick up the new size, the fit was great and the length was perfect with the shoes I wanted.

I'm sorry that happened to you. I know DB alterations cost are insane. But, if they had to squeeze you into a 18 that meant it was too small, they did right by ordering you a 20. People say they are going to lose weight all the time. What would have happened if you didn't lose any weight? It's easier to take a dress in than to let it out. I got my dress from DB and although I tried on a 14 it was too big in the top(I'm a 12 in the top) but wayyyyy too tight on the hips. I would have tore the dress. I had to get a 16. And guess what. It's wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too big all over. I have even lost 20 pounds since then. But guess what, I went back in and the size 14 is still wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too tight on my hips/thighs. So now the 16 is even bigger on me than it was before lol. My dress is a mermaid dress if that helps any

I am so sorry that you're dealing with this. When I was shopping for my dress at David's bridal, my salesperson kept whispering to me to take my dress somewhere else for alterations because David's alterations aren't worth it. My dress from David's bridal was the right size but for my bustle they told me it would need 16 points/buttons, and they charge wayyy too much per point, AND it would have been a bustle the goes under the layers, which would hide my dress's beautiful horsehair hem. The alterations would have cost more than the dress ($800 when the dress was $500). So I took my dress and went to another seamstress. I looked around at a couple seamstresses in my area and went with the cheapest one, who gave me an estimate of $250. She told me that my dress is so light that it only needs ONE OR TWO bustles. She said she had heard that David's bridal never does fewer than 6 bustle points, regardless of the dress. I would highly recommend looking for seamstresses in your area, and taking the size 18 dress to one of them, or cancelling your order and trying with the size 20 dress if you still have it. David's bridal's alterations department is a scam.

    Bridal dresses are tricky.
When I went shopping I had already lost some weight. So having a wedding had my motivation at an all time high.
The 18 wasn't extremely tight on me where I was near ripping it open. It was just an uncomfortable snug fit. I almost feel that I shouldn't have lost weight so the 20 can fit me 🤷‍♀️
Here's a picture of the 18 vs the 20 when it came in. And this was months ago so now tje 20 fits looser. I should have exchanged it since the first time I got it.
But that was me being uneducated in the bridal field

Yes the 20 is bigger but you wouldn't want the uncomfortable feeling of the 18 all night. Seems like they just need to take it in a little bit

David's Bridal did the same to me! I tried on a 14 at the salon and it was a tad to small. When I picked up my dress it was a 16W. It fit like a sack. I was so upset. The dress was on sale but the alterations would have been double the price of the dress. I sold the darn thing. I would never deal with them again!!!

I know! I was fortunate that I got the dress very early on. I still lost money on it, but it would have been a bigger loss had I had it altered.

Oh wow!!!! I hate to hear this happened. I haven’t been dress shopping yet. I was hoping to wait a couple of more months and lose some weight. From all the comments, I will be trying every other store besides David’s.

I ordered my dress from David's bridal. I had to order a bigger size but only because the 14 wouldn't zip the whole way in the back. They suggested I order a 16 the dress is slightly too big but I don't forget losing or gaining a whole lot of weight before October. The person I had was wonderful I have my fitting apt on the 18th of June. I'm nervous/ excited because I just love my dress.

I went with a local shop, and they sized me up from the sample, but I agreed with it since the sample size was too small for my bust but fit perfectly everywhere else. I am using my own seamstress for alterations though. I think all bridal shops, chains or not, up-charge their alterations to make an extra buck.

I'm in a wedding in Oct and the bride had us get our dresses from David's Bridal. They tried to have me order two sizes up when I bought the dress, which I declined, but didn't pressure me into getting the alterations there when I went to pick it up.

Everything will work out for you in the end! I agree, they should waive any fees that come along with a rush order since it was their error!
