Horrible first dress fitting appt

Lizbeth, on May 18, 2019 at 9:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 64
A little back story.
When I purchased my dress I went to a David's bridal in Manhattan.
They squeezed me into a size 18. And suggested I get into a 20. I mentioned that I started working out and plan on shedding some weight for the wedding. They said "okay that's good but they can always take it in a size" so me being naive I just went with it.
Well fast foward 3 months later, today I had my dress fitting in the David's bridal in queens. and they had to take it in so much but i didn't give me any shape, I looked like a rectangle. And I'm a plus size girl and very self conscious about my body, plus I added sleeves and a ugly bustle that I didn't not like so the total of the alterstujns came out to 700 and my dress cost a little over 800.
I had a bridezilla moment and started crying and staring that I felt that they tricked me into getting a size 20 so I would have to do all these alterations and pay all this money.
I told them I dont mind paying for a service but having to pay almost the same price for my dress bc it's too big bc they insisted on a certain size was unfair.
So they now said they will exchange my dress from a 20 to a 18. And expected delivery date is June 17. My wedding is July 3.
I'm super nervous, upset and a bunch of negative emotions.
Now I'm nervous that I'll have to be charged extra for rush free and just feel that I was completely uneducated on bridal shopping.
I wish I knew better.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with that! I hope they get it worked out for you. I also got my dress from David's Bridal and the girl ordered it 2 sizes too big. My wedding is next April and they wouldn't exchange it because "I might gain weight before then."
I really wonder if it's a scam to get more alterations money..

I'm starting to think it is a scam, it sucks that chain stores just worry about the money. I'm shocked they wouldn't let you exchange it. And why would they tell a bride they might gain weight, usually it's the opposite. Maybe try a different David's bridal?

I'm so sorry you are going through this. When I went dress shopping they tried to get me to order a dress in a larger size starting the floor dress may be stretched because of numerous people trying it on. I disagreed and signed a waiver to order the size of floor. Well it came in and is also slightly big but nothing what it would have been if Ivwould have gotten the size they tried to force me to get. I agree it is a money racket to force you to dump crazy amounts into alterations. I hope your new dress comes in quickly and you feel beautiful

That’s awful!!! I can’t believe they wouldn’t listen to what you the customer want to order, regardless of experience, it’s so rude they’d assume so many negative things.

I went with a local bridal shop and the guy who was fitting me took detailed measurements when he ordered my dress and ended up sizing me down knowing I am in the process of losing more weight. Regardless of how easy it is to take in, it’s so much money and better to at least size one down!

They did the same thing to me . Had me try on a size 14 than tried to have me order a size 18. The excuses they gave me was that the sample size is stretched out.

Not a wedding dress, but my MOH got her dress at David's Bridal and then found out she was pregnant. She went a few months later and was able to convince them to exchange it for a larger size. This was a David's Bridal in NJ. She bought the dress online.

See if they’ll waive the rush fee for you too since it’s a result of their error! I’m so sorry you had such a poor experience. Hope everything works out in the end for you though 💕

Thank you! It's pretty ugly that they would do things like this especially when brides are already spending hundreds of dollars on their dress.
I cant believe how often they do this to customers, I'm glad you stuck by you're decision!

Yes I agree, they should listen to the customer first. And I hate to make scenes but I was just so upset at myself and at them that I couldnt help it.

i appreciate when they actually care about you. So happy you had an amazing consultant Smiley smile

Yeah, she said they gave her a hard time. They were like "why did you order a larger size to begin with?" Because apparently she was supposed to see into the future or something.

I hope you are able to get everything squared away. It's ridiculous how much dresses and alterations are. I got my dress at a small bridal shop for $800 and my alterations are $595 and that's just to hem it, take in the bust a little, and do a bustle. If it's wedding related, it's expensive.

I got my dress from David's Bridal. I'm going to get an estimate on alterations first and go somewhere else if needed.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. Smiley sad
You were so happy getting a great deal on your dress too.
It stinks that it almost doubled your price.
I haven't broken it to my fiancee yet that alterations are not free...he was so happy that I stayed on budget.
But, they did tell me, that anything purchased in the store could be returned( with a restocking fee) or exchanged, except for layaway.

Haha yep. I really do love my dress and how I look/feel in it so I'm like "this is ok. You only get married once." I told my fiance how much the alterations cost and he was floored.

It’s 100% a scam. I also purchased from David’s and they measured me a full two sizes smaller than the size they ordered. They tried the weight gain thing on me and I assured them I’ve not gained any weight since high school, even after having two kids. Nope. They like to have that “wiggle room”. So, my dress came in and guess what? Two sizes too big. It’s got to be taken in ALL over. I paid $460 for my dress and haven’t gone to a fitting yet but I fully expect them to quote me at at least $400 for my alterations. Most of which I will need only because they wouldn’t order the size I actually measured at.

Oh that's amazing that they would let you return it. They didn't let me return it, only exchange which I tried to do but ended up choosing the original dress.

I'm currently doing research for a seamstress in my area bc I might take it else where. I'm afraid they will try to make my life more difficult bc they're annoyed with me.

When I told my fiance how much alterations were going to be he was very upset.

My daughters dress cost us 150, her alterations just to them it came out to 120. My aunt paid for it before I can tell her I will take it elsewhere

    Lol mine was too!
I added sleeves to mine which made me love it more but now I'm thinking of opting out it to save me some money
