HELP! Who do you tip?

Private User, on October 2, 2014 at 11:08 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

My dad and I seem to not agree on who we tip and do not tip. I wanted to get opinions on what you did/plan to do when it comes to tips for the DJ, Photographer and baker.

Also, my venue charges a 21% service charge. Do you tip on top of that?

If the service charge is actually their salary, yes. (You should ask your venue exactly their policy..I'm all about transparency....)

I don't really get the idea of tipping a DJ, photographer, etc. It's like tipping your dentist.....

I'd tip delivery people who set up flowers, cake, possibly musicians, make up people. I have no rational basis for this, lol!

OK, i guess I was wrong. I thought it was expected to tip everyone, but my dad said otherwise.. to just tip the servers at the wedding.

He said what you say, why tip someone for doing the job you are paying them to do?

    Thanks for your help!

I've been wondering the same thing, as everyone we are using it's their own business and they don't have employees under them. I was def thinking about tipping the lady for my cake because she will be driving about 25 miles to deliver it to the venue, but I'm not sure I don't want people to think I'm rude and not to tip...

This is based on my own personal wedding experience

    Servers - yes

    Bartenders - yes

    Make-up artist - yes

    Hairstylist - yes

    Band - no

Photographer - no, she owned her own business... if she was a photographer working for a bigger company, yes

Baker - no, she owned her own business and she herself delivered the cake

Florist - no, we picked up our flowers the day before

Every person I am using owns their own business as well.

I am having trouble with my venue and the dessert table and my baker (who is a family friend of my FSIL) said for me not to pay the additional $400 and she will stay, set everything up and replenish all the desserts as needed. I asked her yesterday if she will still do that since I had my food tasting yesterday and spoke with my venue again and they wont budge. She of course will get a meal and can dance the night away in between doing the desserts! If she does do that, I will for sure give her a nice tip!

Shoot. I didn't think about the baker or the florist. Any suggestions on how much to tip them? My list goes like this...

    DOC - $100

    Catering Manager - $100

    Bartenders $40 ea (x2)

    Wait Staff - $30 ea (x4)

    Pantry Staff - $30 ea (x2)

    Hair $60

MUA - she's doing it for free and I'm paying for her hotel room for two nights - so nada...

    Limo - $80

    Shuttle bus drivers - $80 ea (x2)

We aren't tipping our vendors. Seems silly to me really, especially on top of what we're already paying them! Just thank you notes and a nice review.

But we're definitely tipping all the hourly employees, assistants, catering staff etc that'll be there setting up for our wedding. We're anticipating about 40 plus workers.

I was wondering the same thing. Our venue charges and additional 18% for gratuity. Would you still tip on top of that? I don't plan to tip the photographer.

I asked my photographer about this cause we're friends. She said she received a tip once and it was hard to accept. In my area anyways, photographers don't get tips.

Also I used to work in a flower store. We never got tips for wedding arrangements.

I can see hair/makeup, catering (if not already included), bartending, baker.... officiant maybe?

We had the budget and our vendors were amazing so we did 20% for all of them. Even if they owned their own business. Not everyone tips, so it helps counter that. All of them were extremely grateful and appreciative. Our venue charged 18% service charge, that covered wages, we tipped each server $20 and allowed a tip jar on the bat for the bartender, he made good money from our guests.
