Help us decide!!! First dance songs!!

Amanda, on April 6, 2015 at 9:35 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

We've been struggling with finding our first dance song. Fh was dead set on 'All of me' john legend but I wasn't feeling it. We've spent countless hours googling first dance songs and came up with nothing. Then, last night, an infomercial came on for time life oldies music and a sweet love song came on. We watched and took notes lol Post infomercial, we have 2 songs we both LOVE and see as potential 1st dance songs! (Of all the places to find one, an infomercial! lol) First is "True Love Ways" Buddy Holly http://youtu.be/aSZ84u8A4ak second is "I Only have Eyes for You" Art Garfunkel http://youtu.be/K9C53IEcg_0

Both are beautiful and I can see us using one of these two! And, it's not John Legend! (YAY) which would you pick?! Opinions?

Thanks Beth. That's what I'm leaning towards. It's just so romantic and I think would be perfect for a first dance!

Oohhhhhh I love that song Mrs Cheapskate! Anything by Elvis, really, is awesome! I love the oldies! There are some really pretty songs! Fh never heard 'only have eyes for you' and was blown away! I never heard 'lovers ways' and swooned over the lyrics! Just so sweet!

UGHHHHHHHHHHHHH True Love Ways. I'm a Buddy Holly fanatic. Also, My Morning Jacket does a KILLER cover of that song.

We're doing a bluegrass cover of Springsteen's "On Fire" if that counts as an oldie (kind of almost does, sadly).

We're going for otis redding. Either "that's how strong my love is" or "these arms of mine".

    We can't decide

Amanda - great choice! I personally love Sinatra but fh isn't a fan. He's a huge Buddy Holly fanatic like m m! That cover was nice, thanks, but I must admit, I adore all the horns in the original! Springsteen is a classic now I guess! lol Crazy how time flies! That's a great song and I'm sure the bluegrass cover would be gorgeous!

Drop the Mic - that ones overdone as well in my opinion. Or, it will be when my wedding comes around! My step son is planning on singing and playing that song on his guitar for our bridal party dance so it will be played. I like it, but, not my top choice for our first dance

@DropTheMic Thinking Out Loud is just as over done, if not more!

Fh and I liked the Art Garfunkel song out of the two but he says your silly for not wanting John Legend. This is our song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzX0rhF8buo. A bit different than all of yours but it's more our speed.

"True Love Ways" would be my personal fav of the two, but Garfunkel's version is pretty special as well. Just make sure your DJ starts "TLW" at "Just You know why". My version, a cleaned up, digital version, includes some introductory studio noise and a tech giving the take number before Buddy begins singing. If I remember right, the song was meant as a gift/apology to his wife, whom he felt he had neglected when he was extensively touring right before he recorded it. Either one will be good tho. Use the other for an Anniversary dance or when you cut the cake or as a last song, then you'll have both Smiley smile

I love anything by Buddy Holly. We're using We Belong Together by Ritchie Valens. There will be lots of oldies at our wedding because we hired a rockabilly band! I'm excited!

BTW, the John Legend song is nice, but when it really hit last year probably every other wedding I did used it as their first dance. Even now, I'd say one in five use it. What I like is when the song is unique. When people here "All of Me" they may not immediately associate it with your big dance because it has been so popular, but if Buddy or Art comes on they will be taken right back to your first dance without any other memories cluttering up that recollection. Good luck Amanda & congrats!
