Help the dress is too small

Candice, on April 19, 2018 at 6:52 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

I bought a second hand dress. A uk12 says altered in places to a 10, but I’m sure the upper part is a size 8. Anyone have ideas how many dress sizes too small this is and whether taking an altered dress like back to the bigger size is possible.

That looks atleast three to four sizes too small. Idk if you can do a corset back due to the mesh, it’s worth a try at a good tailor but it’s going to cost you. Depending on how much you already spent, I would look for something else and not spend $500 on this. General alterations are often $300+, so this will definitely be more.

I spent 300 just to hve my dress let out an inch at the hips, as stated about these alterations could get costly. Is there a consignment bridal store near you? Maybe you could "exchange" this dress for some store credit and get something that fits a little better. So sorry that happened to you!

Letting a dress out is more difficult and more costly than taking one in. Sometimes it’s not even possible depending on the structure and material of the dress. I would say you’re talking a minimum of $500 in alteration, if it’s even possible.

Thansk for all your replies. Is that the case even if the dress was originally 1-2 sizes bigger?

I’ve taken another photo and think its not over 2 sizes too big. If the hips were widerned the whole thing would drop down and do up. It looks a lot further off than it is i think.

Yes, it will still be the case if the dress was originally bigger. Most dresses can be taken in, but a lot can’t be take out. This will be especially true in your case because the seamstress you use won’t have any of the dress pieces that were originally removed so you’ll have to pay for the additional fabric.

I don’t know if you’d like it or not but this happened to someone else on here a few months ago and they had their alterations done so the buttons were taken off and more of a string corset back was added.

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I’ve begged the previous owner to take it back. I’m sure they will not thought. If that’s the case I’ll try traid for store vouchers. If thsts not possible ill alter it anyway possible to make it fit.

Never buy a second hand wedding dress online!

    Thanks again.

I'm so sorry! You must be so upset! The suggestion of the mock corset ties in the back is a great idea!! You could leave the buttons below where the ties would begin. As to matching the fabric is one thing but the color match depending on the age of the dress would be extremely difficult! The corset may be the only way to go! Once again I'm so sorry!

Discuss with a tailor that specializes in wedding dresses whether you can alter the back to be a low back instead of letting it out. I agree that letting it out is going to be difficult.

I got a dress with a back like your dress and at the time of buying, they mentioned that the tailor could make it a low back if I didn't want to be covered up

    Good luck!

Honestly - you could take it to a seamstress and see if its possible to alter it to a low back version - however it might still be just as, or more, expensive as going to some place like DB and trying to catch the 99$ sale or going to an in person consignment boutique or jsut buying an off the rack dress. With the fall lines coming out a lot of places will do a sample sale right now to make room. You might be better off just going and buying something that fits off the rack.

But it cannot hurt to ask a seamstresses opinion first either.

I hope you're not planning on dropping 4kg just because of this dress because honestly you look healthy as you are right now. Don't stress yourself and your body out even more - I would take this dress to a seamstress to see what they say. I agree with Munchkin that you might be better off with an off the rack dress.

I had wanted to tone up anyway. Maybe weight loss isn't the right term. Thank you all so much for your help. I didn't have options before, just 500€ down the drain. We have a family friend of a friend who works with dresses. So I might have an affordable alteration option. He's on holiday at the min. I’ll update the thread in the future with whatever solution I find. I live in germany but don’t speak german, all my bridesmaids are in the uk. So I stupidly ordered online being too affraid to go in stores.

Mine was too small as well. It was also too long. My seamstress was able to take the extra fabric length and sew in two side panels that look original to the dress. She charged me $375 total for all alterations including hem length, side panels, bustle, and adjusting the shoulders. I would go to a great seamstress and see what can be done. THere are usually options.

Update, thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. I wanted to update the post for any future brides with this dilemma who might find this chat in a search. The dress fits! I lost 4kg (just in fat muscle mass remained the same) and I had the dress altered by a friend of the family for 120€.
