Help! Registering in nyc for ordained person

Kaytee, on October 4, 2019 at 8:49 AM Posted in New York Planning 0 3
Hello! My step father got ordained in order perform the marriage ceremony for us. In NYC they have to register but we don’t understand how to fully do that. He doesn’t live here but not too far away.

Unfortunately, NYC is quite strict about who can officiate weddings (you can't just get ordained online and call it a day). You have to be a clergy person with an associated congregation and submit documentation as proof to the Office of the City Clerk. However you don't have to live in NYC or have your house of worship located in NYC to register as an officiant (but you do have to get the required docs translated if they're not in English). Here is the link to the their webpage on the registration process. Hope this helps!

    No, I don't think that's entirely true.

We got married in NYC in a civil ceremony. Our officiant is legally allowed to marry people in the state of NY, but he is not a clergy person, nor does he have a congregation.

There are rules, but being a religious figure isn't one of them.

Your best bet is to reach out to the marriage bureau of NYC.

Welcome to the WeddingWire community, Kaytee!

That is so sweet that he got ordained!

I would also definitely you reach out to the marriage bureau of NYC and get confirmation on everything that needs to be done.
