Help! Planning during the pandemic.

Hello fellow Grooms and Brides,
I’m having an issue with planning my wedding, we are at a standstill because of NYC stay at home rules and it’s beginning to worry us. Our date is on 10/9/2020 and though it’s a decent time away it’s concerning us because we don’t want to have to scramble in 3 months to finalize things for our big day. Our venue Dumbo Loft has not been reassuring on our concerns. They keep reiterating that they are following government mandates And our date is too far out but that to me doesn’t help people who are still planning and can not. To add insult to injury the venue told us that if we want to change our date we would be forfeiting our down payment and would have to submit a new one for a new date. The issue is that the wedding season just got much smaller, which means that planing has now gotten more competitive as everyone’s date shifts to the fall. If we were able to shift out to winter or even early next year that would give us ample time to plan and open up more availability for those dates that were canceled in spring and summer. Is anyone else experiencing this and if so how are you guys handling it?

What do you still have to plan? What vendors do you still need to book?

I’m in NYC too, and a couple 3 months out from your date. We’re hoping that there isn’t a resurgence during that period. Does your contract specify anything about changing your date or postponing ? You can try the thumbtack app to secure any vendors that you can’t physically meet and since the venue is the only one besides hair and makeup that you need to actually go out and see you can book through the app. I think we should be okay by mid summer.

    - Furniture (tables, chairs, sweetheart table,) -we have vendors lined up
    - Decor (flower arrangements, alter, center pieces)- we have a decor vendor
    - Photographer/ videographer - we do not have one booked yet- Wedding band shopping The issue is that most of these things require in person meetings or getting supplies at an establishment (flowers) for our vendor to sample designs which is something that cannot be done at this time. In addition, we have people flying in for our wedding and as they cannot purchase tickets now they will be forced to purchase tickets less in advance.

Mmm there’s a few other in-person things we need to see. Unfortunately, there is no virtual capabilities for our furniture vendors. Our decor vendors are a small business and so they need to physically go out to get supplies to creat samples for us. My fiancé and I need to try on wedding bands which I need to go to a shop for. So there’s a few things that require us to meet physically. I will however look into thumbtack app. Thanks so much for that recommendation.

You can book a photographer/videographer online and should book these asap as they can book up fast.

Ring shopping you can do virtually - we used manlybands for my fiance and for my wedding band he just purchased the matching set for my engagement ring online.

Decor and furniture can happen pretty last minute since you already have the vendors lined up. I would reach out to them and see what timeline they recommend but I'm sure you would be able to meet with them one on one over the summer once things calm down a bit more.

And people usually don't need to buy domestic flights until about 1-2 months in advance for good prices so I think that will not be an issue.

So More and more I’m hearing that friends and acquaintances are postponing their wedding indefinitely or at least to 2021. Some of the dates are close to and even later than ours on 10/9. Besides the challenges of planning during the stay at home order in NYC we are worried that this might not be the time to be spending tens of thousands of dollars. Anyone else feeling the same way?
