HELP Men's Wearhouse screwed us out of $400

Theresa, on May 19, 2017 at 4:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

Hi, sorry, need to vent and ask for advice.

So, we're two weeks and day to the wedding. Future DH goes to men's wearhouse to pick up his suit. When we bought the tux, we were told that if 7 or more groomsmen rented a tux, we got a $600 voucher we could apply to DH's tux. We had to pay the $600 ourselves first and then we would be refunded that amount before the wedding and the voucher would be applied. I assumed to make sure that we had enough groomsmen tuxes rented. Cool, we wanted that. Makes sense.

Here's where it gets messy. Today, expecting to get our money back, DH is told he can only get a $400 voucher for future purchases and they could give him the difference of $200 cash because of being told $600.

No. Just no. We need that $600 for bills and final wedding costs. We wouldn't have bought his tux if that were the case. We would have rented a cheaper tux. It costs almost as much as my dress that was a hem to hollow.

What should I do? We need that money. Not more MW crap.

Do you have what they promised in writing? Did you speak to a manager?

Unless you have it in writing there isn't anything you can do. Are you sure you understood the promotion; credit future purchase vs applied to previously purchased item? Look for the promotion, check your receipt, find it in writing or be grateful you received a $200 refund based on your word that one of their associates gave you incorrect information. I'm sorry this happened and hope you can prove it is their error.

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. Thank you for sharing though, we were considering a similar offer from them.

Do you have anything in writing, and can you check the original receipt??

Here's what their website says about the free tux rental promotion:

Sorry that posted really small! On their website it details the following promotion:

How does the free tux rental promotion work for my wedding?

With 5 paid tuxedo rental packages (which must include coat and pants, rental shirt, rental tie or retail tie and rental jewelry) or suit rental packages (which must include coat and pants, rental shirt and rental vest) (“Rental Package”), you can choose between:

A $400 shopping credit on a single retail purchase except shoes, and Exceptional Value, engraveable or custom items.

    OR

One free Rental Package, with a maximum value of $239.99.

Also, with 10 paid Rental Packages, you may select an additional free Rental Package

Other restrictions apply. Visit a store or SEE TERMS for complete details.

It sounds like the store misled you to get you to purchase the tux before the GM reserved their rentals. Have you spoken to a manager at the store you purchased from? Is the tux still in unworn condition? Maybe you can get them to return or exchange it.

I'd have to ask FDH about any signing he did, but this would be one big elaborate misunderstanding then. We worked with the same consultant on multiple occasions and we talked about it everytime. He knew we're both mostly broke, recent college grads. We were going to rent a tux until he brought this all up. We weren't even planning on the groomsmen doing full tuxes, but figured it would be safe idea for them to have a suit coat to wear in case it is cold on the mountain that day.

It was more than one conversation over a period of months. We were told buying the tux would be a better deal.

I found a consumer affairs review from Feb that also mentions the 7 rentals and $600 voucher promotion!

Call corporate. We had issues with them as well. Our guys had all bought their suits, and they were all going to buy shoes. Unfortunately, one of the guys backed out of the shoes after all was said and done. Because of that, 3 more GM decided they didn't want to buy shoes. But they are willing to spend $200 on 2 trophies that have a toilet sitting on it... (don't ask long and strange story). Anyway, we were told by the consultant to wait for all of the pieces to come in so we could return the shoes no problem. By the time we could get all of the men (GM, FOG, and FH) it was time to choose rentals and do alterations. We had gone in late January to pick suits, we went in mid April to do all of the other stuff. We get through alterations yada yada. Now comes the time to pay. The consultant who knew when the shoes were bought was insistent of having the men pay for their alterations and rentals first. Now here's where things got sticky. The shoes that were bought in January, are now non refundable because it was past 30 days. So the only thing that they said could have been done was to have $400 of store credit issued.

Now what really upset me was that they knew when the shoes were bought. Why wouldn't you return the shoes onto store credit first? Our guys could have used the $400 of lost money to pay for their alterations and rentals. So after a long 2 hours of trying to figure out the mess that was supposed to be a 30 minute appointment. We had called corporate and they issued us our money back in a check after we explained the situation to them.

    ETA: I can't spell.

@FutureMrs.Saddler Yeah, the first thing my sister said when I said we went through MW was that they were shady. Explains why she went through a local suit and tux place for hers. But alas, we have out of state groomsmen and the in states live every which way.

@Theresa I figured it would be better for my guys as well. One of GM is out of state and getting ready to move again. But even for the guys we do have locally, I or FMIL were not happy with how the alterations went. My FH has an athletic body build, 5ft 9in 160lbs and his pants looked like parachute pants. My FBIL is a huge guy 6ft and 200 something pounds and he was able to put BOTH of his arms down his pants.

Am I the only one with a raised eyebrow at in effect expecting the groomsmen to pay for the grooms tux? I think they should be given the rebate.

Oh ya they are suckers they knew you couldn't use that money on a tux before you got everything there we had the same issue only we ditched them, and told them to just nevermind, they are a rip off I am so sorry for you!!! I have told everyone I know not to use them because the 400.00 is a total scam to make a lot of money off of they rentals, I bought everything from Kolhs, and online for our guys and total cost was 93.00$ each and they get to keep everything!!

@Karen We bought their bow ties and suspenders. FDH also had to rent a tux for the weekend before ours for one of our groomsman's wedding.

It isn't our money to rebate either, it was a loan for the wedding.

Money is really tight, and it seemed like a good deal. I'm a grad student, he's got a job in his field, but it doesn't pay much till he moves up and the city we live in isn't cheap. The groomsmen were made aware of why we were renting full tuxes and we asked them if they were okay with it. They are, and they know we don't expect anything else from them except showing up to the wedding. Plus, it may be low 60s and windy the day of. So, a coat will probably be needed.

Yikes. We got the $400 as well, but they told us we needed to wait until everyone purchased. We got it then got $100 in credits on top of that for what we spent on his tux and used it for shirt and shoes. I can't imagine them refunding money like that after you've already purchased this. I'm so sorry! Can anyone else in your family use the credit and pay you? Maybe your dad's grandpa's or uncle's?

It's a little late to say this but never ever expect money to pay for something, have the money to pay for it and if the money comes through it's extra.

And never take a loan out for a wedding. Starting a marriage in debt is never a good idea.

I'm going thru them and we never paid that much money and I had a coupon for the guys they paid 180 for there suites and only had to put 20 down and with FH he had to put 40 down and will get it back once he picks up his tux and since he had 5 or more guys he gets a free tux if he had 10 guys besides himself he could get a free suit or he can trade it for another free tux for one of his GM or his father. Why was your suit so much

I feel like you have may misunderstood the policy, or they explained it poorly.

We were told if we rented 5 or more tuxes, we got either a free suit for DH (up to $600), or his rental free. We opted to have DH pay rent his tux (to make it 5), and then he purchased a suit after the wedding.

It worked out for us since it was only family, and we paid for a portion of each tux - which it was just like we go our money back. I don't think they broke any deals, I think there was some miscommunication.

I also think spending borrowed money with the idea that it will be replaced, which actually sounds like you spent outside of your budget with the hopes this would work out, is a really tough spot to put yourself in. Please speak with a financial planner to help plan better in the future so you can have an easier time paying for things like this without stressing yourself out.

    ETA - clarity

We had MAJOR issues with MW also. I won't go into the details but after speaking with probably 10 different people (store manager + corporate + CEOs receptionist), we finally got the custom suits we ordered AND they refunded us the almost $800 for both suits. It was stressful since it was happening the month before our wedding and we STILL didn't have the suits BUT they made it right in the end by refunding. Call corporate and go higher and higher up until you get what you want.
