Help me pick alcohol so everyone can get drunk

At first I thought bringing our own alcohol was a good thing, now I'm worried we won't have enough options or we'll run out of stuff so help me please! I know we have a lot of time, but I want to be prepared in case Total Wine has a good sale (they had 15% off all wine over MDW) so I can maximize our alcohol budget.

240 guests (hopefully closer to 225, but planning for 240). Less than 10 people on that list aren't of drinking age and almost all of our family and friends drink. My family drinks a lot. I don't really know if they prefer beer, wine, or liquor. I'm pretty sure it's all of the above. I'll put the break down in the comments. I also need some brand recommendations if you have them!

So is this enough alcohol and a good variety? I'm trying to make it as close to a full open bar as I can get without going broke buying a million different things.

Definitely need some Bacardi on that list. I don't know your family but for mine: grey goose and Hennessy are a must.

And I'm one of those wine drinkers with a crazy sweet tooth. Love Moscato.

We skipped the champagne toast. Everyone can toast us with whatever drink they're already drinking. If you really want a good, reasonably-priced champagne, I'd go with Segura Viudas. In Quebec, it's actually a bit cheaper than Henkell Trocken and so much better.

Have you tried to Goose Island IPA?

For Tequila, I think Patron is expensive. Maybe go with Jose Cuervo instead? Myabe the Gold one? I don't know what prices are in your area compared to mine.

For scotch, you could actually do Jameson whisky instead. It's pretty popular and not too expensive.

For gin, I actually LOVE Tanqueray. I'm not a Bombay Saphire person at all. When I'm not drinking beer or wine, I'm drinking gin. Beefeater and Gordon's are bottom shelf, but honestly they're fine for a wedding so if I were you, I'd stick to that.

For beer, I'm not a huge fan of Rolling Rock personally. I think it's pretty interchangeable with Bud Light or Coors Light but don't quote me on that. I usually drink red, amber or dark beers like a double oatmeal stout.

    Enjoy Smiley smile

Good selection. IMO you should add more liquor though. 2 bottles of white rum seems pretty low for 240 guests. I love champagne & (white) wine but those aren't my drinks of choice at a wedding where I'm trying to get tipsy lol. I always go for the liquor/cocktails. I guess you know your crowd but if you have a lot of younger people, I'm sure they'll want cocktails as well.

This may just be me, but for 240 guests, you need to up your wine. I had 72 bottles each of red and white, plus 12 bottles of rose for 130 guests. But, our families are mostly wine drinkers.

I'd suggest going with more light beers and cut back on the Guinness (to one case) and IPA (2-3 cases). Toward the end of the night, the partying crowd will probably want to switch to something lighter. But you know your crowd best.

For IPA, I'm a fan of Saranac IPA or Sierra Nevada.

I love red blends. Most people will enjoy them and they go great in dinner (I love Dark Horse and 14 Hands). For white wine go with Chardonnay (Chateau Ste. Michelle is good) or Pinot Grigio (La Fiera is great). They tend to be crowd-pleasers and are on the cheaper side.

I would definitely do a bud light. Have you looked into getting kegs? Much more bang for your buck. Red wine I would think youre safe with just a Cabernet. White wine I would be a Pinot Grigio or Moscato and a chardonnay (basically a sweet and a dry). I know if I had to buy booze for my wedding it would be all Jack Daniels and bud/bud light but we're a bunch of FL rednecks Smiley winking

I found www.thealcoholcalculator.com to be helpful. It'll give you a guideline as to qty of each you should have. You can customize the number of people, avg. cost, method of purchase (cases, kegs, etc.), even the number of drinks per person. I'm using it as my guideline for how much to get. As for types, previous posters have given good ideas.

As for type of champagne I would go cheaper. Andre tastes better to me than Dom and you can always get custom labels off of etsy if you don't want people to know you went the cheaper route. But honestly, they shouldn't care! I have never once complained about the selection when it comes to free booze.

@Spazzy good point, I'll up the beer. I compared a few different lists of what to get and they said 16-18 cases, but 20 cases is 2 beers pp and that doesn't seem like enough. I know some people won't drink beer, but I don't want to run out of anything and we can return unopen cases or bottles

@Erin the reception is 5 hours and yes 24 beers per case

I'll add some Malibu and I'll pick a nicer gin.

Thank you all so much for all the suggestions and opinions!

How long is your reception? I did some quick math, and it appears that for 240 guests, you have approximately 5 drinks pp total (factoring beer=1, wine=5, liquor=17 drinks). You may want to increase your numbers overall (specifically the wine) or recheck my math.

A sweet white sparkling wine suggestion would be bartenura. It's relatively inexpensive

Don't cut the champagne!!! I always drink champagne at weddings. If it is at the bar I will drink it all night. Celia would back me up if she was here Smiley smile

ETA: Maybe cut back on the number of bottles and beef up the other wine bottle numbers.

You can check out Costco our Sam's club prices too. It's apparently illegal for anyone to require membership for alcohol purchases, so it's a loophole! As long as nothing non-alcohol is in your cart, you're fine. The prices might be better.

@KPizzle reception is 5 hours. I'm going to increase wine to 36 bottle of each and increase the beer to 30-35 cases instead of 20. The liquor (aside from the tequila) are all handles so according to google there's 29-39 drinks per bottle. Rough math with the new number is 7.5 drinks per person which should be good? 3 for the first hour and 1 for each hour after or something like that right?

@Staci good point! I'll keep some champagne, just reduce it and have it available at the bar instead of a glass at each place setting for toasts.

@Ash I live in Pennsylvania and we have weird liquor laws so Costco doesn't sell alcohol

I can't help with the quantity portion of the questions but I would recommend prosecco over champagne.

Depends how crazy you wanna get with the IPA. Sierra Nevada makes a nice easy one. Troegs makes a stronger flavored excellent IPA.

Thumbs up on the Tito's. Might I suggest Gosling's Dark Rum instead of a spiced rum? (Spiced rums can be an acquired taste for some..).

If Champs is too pricey, you can always go the Prosecco route. I freaking love prosecco.

ETA: Tequila: My suggestion is El Jimador. I hate tequila and have found that to be the only one I can tolerate. It's really smooth.

Skip the Patron(overly priced for a sub par tequila)

I'd either go with Milagro Silver, or Reposado for straight up(it's a lot smoother than Patron, and costs less) or Cazadores for mixing.

For tequila: Patron is hella expensive.

I'm a big fan of cazadores, but I think that's a little pricey too. 1800 Silver or Sauza would be another choice for you. El Jimador is another great option.
