Help me pick alcohol so everyone can get drunk

S&P, on June 15, 2016 at 10:51 AM Posted in Planning 0 56

At first I thought bringing our own alcohol was a good thing, now I'm worried we won't have enough options or we'll run out of stuff so help me please! I know we have a lot of time, but I want to be prepared in case Total Wine has a good sale (they had 15% off all wine over MDW) so I can maximize our alcohol budget.

240 guests (hopefully closer to 225, but planning for 240). Less than 10 people on that list aren't of drinking age and almost all of our family and friends drink. My family drinks a lot. I don't really know if they prefer beer, wine, or liquor. I'm pretty sure it's all of the above. I'll put the break down in the comments. I also need some brand recommendations if you have them!

So is this enough alcohol and a good variety? I'm trying to make it as close to a full open bar as I can get without going broke buying a million different things.

    20 cases of beer:

    7 Yuengling

    4 Blue Moon

    3 Rolling Rock

4 IPA (need a good IPA suggestion if you have one!)

    2 Guinness

My dad likes Rolling Rock and his dad likes Guinness. My grandfather is also a dark beer drinker. Blue Moon is for me and FH wants Yuengling (not that we could ever get married in Philadelphia without it). I feel like we need an IPA for variety. If we were to cut or replace one Guinness would probably be the first to go or Rolling Rock unless my dad really wants it- I have to talk to him about that. Do we need something like Bud Light?

    36 Red Wine

    24 White Wine

    35 Champagne

We know basically nothing about wine so any suggestions are welcome; we’re also going to talk to our parents about wine choices because they’re wine drinkers. I was thinking 2 types of each. I read that red wine would be more popular (dinner choices are short ribs, chicken, or vegetarian), but is the split too uneven? Any decent and reasonably priced champagne (but really sparkling wine because I can’t afford the good stuff for 240 people) recommendations?

    7 Tito's (1.75 L)

    3 Beefeater (1.75 L)

    5 Maker's Mark (1.75 L)

    2 Scotch (1.75 L)

    2 Spiced Rum (1.75 L)

    2 White Rum (1.75 L)

    2 Patron (750 ml)

We have to have two bars so we have to have at least 2 bottles of everything, but they can be smaller bottles if you think we have too much of something. Need rum and scotch suggestions if you have them! Is Beefeater a good enough gin? That’s what we have at home, but I really don’t know much about gin quality. We’ll get sweet and dry vermouth and triple sec or some other orange liqueur, but what other things like that should we get?

I would cut the champagne. Limit it to one per table. It's not a big drink unless it's the good stuff. I would up your white rum and Patron or offer a cheaper tequila for shots. If you have older family members, maybe consider a good scotch?

The champagne is mostly for toasting. I read something that said there's ~8 toasting glasses per bottle so that's 30 bottles right there plus some extra just in case.

We're not allowed to do shots which is why I didn't think we'd need too much tequila lol

Agree with Jessie, champagne never is as popular. whereas white wine goes fast! basically at the last couple weddings I went to they ran out of white wine because it was such a crowd pleaser.

Yep, I'd go less champagne too. Assume everyone will have one glass for a toast, but most people probably won't keep drinking it.

I would add a Bud Light, or Michelob Ultra, or one that's a little more common. . . though my two personal favorites are already on your list! Smiley smile

Spiced rum suggestion: Captain Morgan! And I'd probably go with Bacardi for the White.

Scotch: Macallan is always a good choice. I know a TON of Scotch drinkers (myself included) whose tastes are super different, but everyone loves Macallan. I'm also a big fan of Aberfeldy Scotch. Its usually pretty affordable. Laphroig is another favorite too, or Aberlour.

In my experience, MOST people enjoy a red wine with dinner. Malbecs, Merlots, or Pinot Noirs are my favorites, or a nice red blend like Menage a Trois or Apothic.

I'm not much help with white wines, since all I like are Moscatos, and those are SWEEEEET.

I've never had Beefeater, but Bombay Sapphire and Boodles are good gins too, if you want to compare prices.

I think your beer selection is good. You've got something for everyone.

I'm not a rum drinker, so I'm no help there. (It makes me cry. lol)

What's more important: Having a fully stocked open bar? Or not going broke?

FH likes Lagunitas IPA and Sierra Nevada Torpedo. He's also a fan of Sierra's ruthless rye.

Not everyone will drink champagne, I'm a champagne snob and unless it's the good stuff, I'll stick to regular wine for the toast. I'd cut your champagne, up your wine, beer and spirits. Another good spiced rum is Kraken, also, Malibu is a good mixer and often lacking at weddings.

Have you considered just letting people toast with their own glasses? The whole champagne toast can get a bit much nowadays, and if you don't have that, you can get just one case (12 bottles) of sparkling and be done with it.

My stepsister even had a full "Bubbly Bar" with about 8 cases of champagne and I think they went through like, 1.

Um, can I come to this two-bar wedding? Your selection sounds awesome! For cheap sparkling wine, I love Astoria Proseco- I found it at the liquor store attached to Sam's Club for $12 a bottle and got a case discount for our wedding. Even though it's a winter wedding with a beef option for dinner, I would have equal amounts of white wine. I think a lot of women drink it exclusively at weddings. I would do two choices of each color wine, not two types total- not sure if that's what you meant. I went with a blend of each color to try to crowd-please, so Cab Sauv & Red Blend/ Sauv Blanc & White Blend. Are you doing olives for martinis? For both white and spiced rum, I like Cruzan- better and less known than Bacardi for about the same price. I think Beefeaters is fine as a non-gin-snob, but it does stand in contrast to the top-shelf Patron. For 3 handles, can you watch for sales and swing for Sapphire or Tanquerey (sp?)? I

I would get some more liquor.. patron, jack, white rum.. And im guessing their including mixers? Have you thought of getting those premade margaritas? I'm not sure if thats cool in the wedding world but my friend had a baby shower and we sever the rita's (mangorita, strawberrita, etc) as cocktails and it was legit a HIT!

But people are going to get drunk and sloppy, you should consider a dry bar... Smiley smile

I'd prob go with less champs and more white too. Pinot noir is a good, easy drinking red, and a Cabernet is good for the die hard red fans.

For IPAs, stone brewery or Sierra Nevada is always a crowd pleaser, at least here in CA

Okay so champagne/sparkling wine is out (or significantly reduced) since everyone seems to be in agreement that no one really wants it and everyone can toast with whatever drink they have like m suggested.

I'll up the wine so there's 36 bottles of each.

Thank you for all the brand suggestions! I'm going to write them down and compare later because Total Wine's website is blocked at work :/

Lauren - have you learned nothing form WW - its rude to ask... just drop hints.

Oh, that sounds like so much fun. I bet you will look so lovey in your dress. Is there anything I can do to help?
