Help! In between wedding dress sizes, do i size up or down?

Natalie, on August 8, 2019 at 11:13 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 34

Hi lovely ladies,

I recently picked my wedding dress and I am in love with it and SO excited. I plan to order it in the next couple days, but I'm trying to decide which size to get. The bridal shop took my measurements and told me I am between a size 16 & 18 (I wear size 12/14 in tops and pants and regular dresses, for reference).

I'm really conflicted about which size to order. I do plan to lose some weight before the wedding (in January 2021), but I don't plan to go on a crazy restrictive diet and intense work out regimen. If I order the bigger size, I'm worried that alterations may be more difficult if the dress is way too big. What would you do??

I was advised to ALWAYS size up! You can always have alterations take a dress in...if you get it too small there is only so much material to work with! You dont want the nightmare of the seamstress working her magic taking the dress out to make it larger and still not fitting. This happened to a friend of mine. She looked at the seamstress and asked her what to do. All the seamstress said as she looked at her incredibly sadly was "...diet?" You DONT want that stress! You dont want to HAVE to lose weight for your wedding. Your fiance loves you as you are now! If you lose weight then great and they will take the dress in... but dont make yourself be soooo worried about fitting into your dress and dieting. Make that dress fit you!

Definitely size up. It's better to take in a dress for alterations than to add fabric.

I would agree with other people saying size up but also you could ask the bridal shop which measurements are most important for your style dress. For example if by the size chart the only measurement that's closer to the larger size is the hip size and you have a big ol' ball gown that's not hugging your hips it might not matter much. That's what happened in my case.

Go up! You can always cut twice but you can't add materials! At least not easily.

Always size up. It is way easier to take in a dress and make it smaller then to make it bigger.

Thanks girl!! I went to my dress shop specifically to try on this exact dress. I tried on a couple others first, then this one and I knew it was the one Smiley love

Always size up. You don’t need the stress of a dress not fitting.

My dress shop said I was right an exact 8, however even though I was exclty a size, they still advised to order a 10 just in case. They can always go down but it is very hard to go up.

The dress store employees will ALWAYS say to size up and I think that is the wisest decision for most people! I was already in the process of losing weight and didn't want to make alterations even more expensive than they will already be so I actually ordered one size down and that dress is too big for me now. I think they say to size up because a lot of brides say they will lose weight and don't because of the stress of it all lol. Better to be safe I'd say. I'm happy my decision didn't come back to bite me later on Smiley tongue

Agreed- size up! It's much easier to take in a dress than it is to let it out.
