Help I dyed my hair and it's too dark

Mrs Drakthal, on January 5, 2014 at 2:18 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

The title says it all. The color said Iced Mahogany Dark Brown and looked about my natural color however now that it is drying it looks almost black.

REally all I wanted to do is cover the gray for tax season and for a party we will be attending next weekend.

Soak your hair in lemon juice, that'll help to lighten it up.

Best thing to do is go see someone at a salon. You don't really want to go back over it with more box dye, but someone from the salon can maybe lighten it with highlights that are a slightly different shade.

Try shampooing your hair? sometimes a shampoo or two right off the bat will help pull some of the color out

If it is a semi-permanent color, shampoo it several times.

If it is a permanent color, check with a salon -- some specialize in "color correction."

You can try strip it with a clarifying shampoo, Suave makes a good one for $3, you can find at any drug store

Sunshine Jenn: guess I will call the salon on Monday or Tuesday and see if there is anyone there in the evenings that I really trust. I wanted highlights anyway! Just wasnt going to do it until Spring!

Thanks Ashley: I have tried the first one before and it does not work well on permanent dyes. And the second I am afraid of as it looks like more chemical.

If washing it doesn't work PLEASE visit a salon. Like PP have mentioned they can put some highlights in it to warm it up to look less severe. You can really further damage your hair if you try to fix it with more color at home!

Well it was permanent color. So I guess it will be off to the salon. I was always told Lemon Juice for blondes and apple cider vinegar for brunettes.....

Just wash it a few times. I've dyed my hair jet black and then after washing it two or three times it turns out a more natural black. It depends on how good your hair takes to dye.

    and that's with permanent color.

I agree with Jet. Sometimes, giving your hair a shampoo or two tends to help lighten the initial color up. You can also go to Sally's and get some toner. Ask one of the clerks what would be best for what you wish to achieve. Above all, NEVER use box color on your hair again! A membership to Sally's is $5/yr, and it gives you a 15% discount on all products in the store, which after that, their professional hair care products cost about as much as a box.

I personally am a natural dark ginger, and I hate the way my hair looks, so I get a "brighter" red as a base and tone it with a mahogany or raven. (Yes, I love the more "Gothic" look.) I learned to tone after I tried just the initial color and came out looking like Bozo for a week. (lol)

I would be careful with washing it too. Some shampoos contain ingredients that result in brown dye looking brassy and...odd. Your stylist can tell you which grocery brand is good to buy.

Wash with a clarifying shampoo and HOT water. The hot water opens your cuticle strand to let the color escape.

Now that it is completely dry I guess it is not as bad as I thought, but I absolutely have no gray left so it makes it look even darker then normal.

Perhaps you're not used to seeing darker color in the mirror every day because you're used to seeing your roots. (?)

It's actually damn close to my natural color but I had not colored it since before the wedding so quite a bit of gray was showing!

Don't worry about it. It'll fade after about 2 days.

I did the same thing. I tried soaking it in hydrogen peroxide (found that on line). Didn't work. Tried a clarifying shampoo. Numerous shampoos later, it's a bit lighter but not a lot.

That's what I get for being a January cheapskate, lol.
