Help!! Brides wearing flats

Mel H, on December 11, 2019 at 4:27 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 44
Hello brides! I’m getting married next year at a winery so I was very set on wearing flats because 1) heels are so uncomfortable for me and I don’t want to be miserable all day bc my feet hurt 2) the grounds of our venue would be hard to walk in with heels and 3) I don’t want to be taller than my FH. BUT, the issue I’m having is that everyone is telling me that I need to wear heels because flats will ruin the look of my dress. I’m 5’4 so I’m not that tall. I’m worried that if I wear flats, I will look short and stumpy whereas heels will make me look elongated - if that makes sense. I’m so conflicted on what to do. I thought maybe wearing a block heel for the wedding would be a bit more comfortable than a stiletto, but IMO, flats will always be the most comfortable option.

Anyway, I guess my question is... is it true that wearing flats will affect the way I look in my dress? Will wearing at least a 2-3 inch heel make me look nicer? At first I thought my family was crazy but now that I think about it I think I understand what they mean. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm wearing flats and honestly haven't heard anyone say that wearing flats makes a bride look short. If you're having an outdoor wedding with uneven terrain, I'd definitely recommend wearing flat shoes. There are so many brides that wear those sparkle Keds.

I'm the same height and I wore flats. I don't feel like I looked short and stumpy in my pictures. The shape of your dress will determine how elongated you look, not the heels. When you go dress shopping, wear flats. How you look then will be how you look.

I am the same height as you and I worn converses. I didn't want to heels because I didn't want to be uncomfortable all night. Most people didn't even know what shoes I was wearing because you couldn't see them. Since you will be walking on difficult grounds, I wouldn't wear heels. I made the mistake of wearing heels to a wedding that the ceremony took place in the grass and my heels kept getting stuck. To get from the ceremony to the reception we had to walk through gravel. It was awful. The bride didn't warn any of her guests so now I avoid wearing heels of any type when I know the wedding is going to be outside.

Do you have a fitted dress or ball gown? If you’re wearing a mermaid or body skimming sheath, yes, heels can help with slimming because your leg and bum muscles are activated in a different way than wearing flats. If your wearing something looser like a ball gown I don’t think it’ll make much of a difference, just have the dress hemmed to whatever shoe you commit to wearing the full night.
Yes, block heels will be more comfortable and functional than stilettos. A wedge heel would work great as well, you won’t sink onto the grass and the weight is dispersed over the full wedge as opposed to the ball and heel.

My cousin wore Toms wedges to her wedding and was super comfortable. The bridesmaids wore black Tom flats which were awesomeeeee. We could comfortably dance the night away

I wore flats because I didn’t want to be taller than my husband and because heels make my feet hurt really bad also. I don’t regret a thing and I was comfortable. Just get some flats that aren’t plain. My flats were white lace. Flats can still be beautiful. Your other option is to wear a kitten heel and then change into flats at the reception. Congrats and good luck.

I have a floor length dress and people only saw my shoes when I lifted my skirt to step up or dance. I picked pretty sandals that went well with my dress and everyone that commented on them thought they were so pretty and went well with the look. I think you'll be fine.

I’m wearing converse too. I’m 5’4” and I couldn’t care LESS if I don’t look “elongated” or conform to what others think. Plus, my shoes won’t even show unless I lift my dress up...which I will definitely do for pictures!

I was a bridesmaid for my best friend. She had an outside wedding on her property. She's about 5'5" and wore flats. Her dress was beautiful! I know if she had worn heels she would have fallen (we're not the most graceful bunch). I'm 5'2" and will be wearing flats during my wedding.

Do what is most comfortable for you! It'll be a long day, and you definitely don't want to be thinking about your feet the whole time. Plus when you're walking down the aisle, you probably don't want to be thinking about not falling.

I love my shoes. I had them decorated. They were so comfortable. My husband changed into black converses for our reception.

I'm wearing flats! I wore heels during my engagement photo session and almost died. I don't want to feel that pain during my wedding.

I’m wearing flats because I look like a baby deer in heels 😂😂! I’d rather be able to walk and be comfy than worry about the look. I’m only 5’1” so I’ll look a little stumpy, but at least I won’t fall. Haha!

I'm 4'11" and wore cowboy boots (no heel). I didn't feel short or stumpy, I felt like myself, which made me even more comfortable and happy on my wedding day! Smiley smile

I had a beach wedding. Our ceremony, cocktail and reception in the sand. I did my alterations appointments barefoot. I wore a wedge heel for the ceremony and some pics and then switched to barefoot sandals for the rest of the night. When it was time to take the shuttles back to the resort I couldn’t find any shoes and had to go back barefoot🤣

I wore flats (I also had a vineyard wedding 🙂) and they did not make a difference at how I looked in my dress. I was more concerned about comfort than anything! I wore my shoes all night and my feet felt great. I’ve had several bride friends wear heels and regrets it by reception time.
Your dress will be altered to you and the shoes you choose, so you won’t look stumpy in it. I’d go for comfort, if I were you.

I’m 5’4” too! I wore flats when I tried on dresses and will be wearing flats on my wedding day lol wear what makes you feel comfortable! I’m not really a heel gal; my fiancé at 5’7” is the shortest man I’ve ever been with, so it feels weird if I wear anything with a substantial heel because I’m not used to seeing eye to eye 😂😂😂 you can find a cute flat, or maybe even a short but chunky heel if you feel silly in flats!

I wore a wedge with a small heel. My dress covered my shoes, so no one even saw them. I wanted shoes I could stand in all day and be comfortable. I took my shoes to my dress fittings to make sure my dress length was appropriate. It worked out great for me.
