HELP! Are belly bands really necessary?

I'm in the process of editing our invitations and I'm starting to wonder if belly bands are necessary... thoughts? What are the pros and cons if any?

The pro: they are pretty. The con: they can be pricey. I did it, but its a total waste.

Not necessary but I admit I loved mine. I did them myself using ribbon that was 50% off and hot glued it. Didn't cost that much to do, but I'm sure it added to the price of postage.

I cut scrapbook paper and hotglued them and my invites were still light enough that they could be mailed with a regular stamp. I liked the look of a band holding it together but didn't want to pay extra, so using pretty printed paper I already had was a good compromise!

I actually didn't like the look of the belly bands.
