Okay so my wedding is on my father's farm. I'd like to do hay bale seating for the ceremony but wanted to get opinions on whether I have covered my bases or not. Cost- These hay bales are 100% free to me, The materials below were all bought in bulk and were inexpensive. Comfort- Now I know these are prickly, so I've taken the proper precautions. See pic for an idea. I got thick quilt batting in bulk and covered the tops of them, and over that covered the ENTIRE bale with white fabric, some with lace overlay. There should be no skin contact with the bale and should have a "pillowy top" feel. I've test sat on these in a dress, in my jeans, practically my bare ass, and I'm not getting pricked. So I assume it should be okay. This wedding is laid back with a short 15-20 minute ceremony. Elderly- I will have the front rows with regular chairs for the elderly and anyone who have may back issues. Allergies: I've checked with guests and have found no bad hay allergies. Did I forget anything?

Yes I definitely checked for any possibility. Like i said I've asked everyone about hay allergies and so far no concerns. I think I will also state the seating arrangement in my wedding website as well, couldn't hurt.

I'm sorry but I think this is a pinterest idea that should die. There is seriously NOTHING comfortable about sitting on those. They are short and even if they are covered in the most exquisite down comforters there are no back rests. A laid back 15-20 minute ceremony is more like 30 minutes of sitting on a hay bale with no back. Please reconsider. It may look cute but it will not be the least bit comfortable.

Wow I think they look amazing. I guess those of us raised on a farm have different opinions from those who weren't. I actually find hay bales comfortable... Personally I'd rather sit on a hay bale than in a straight backed chair. (and I do sit on them instead of chairs in the barn). I think you have covered all your bases with this idea, and they are sooooo cute!

Well, a lot of us weren't raised on a farm. I was just googling about the difference between hay and straw and the fact that dead rodents, snakes, and other animals can end up in bales. Pinterest doesn't mention that. I checked with sister in law who has raised horses her whole life and she says she finds dead rodents on a fairly regular basis when she is feeding her horses. Sorry it is cute on pinterest but I think the execution lacks a LOT.

Thank you brstrickland! All of my guests are from the same farm town as I am and are all aware of what goes on in the creation of haybales. It's just what we sit on haha. And Jeleebeenz I get what you're saying cause you "weren't raised on a farm". But my attendees were, and I have regular chairs for the elderly and people with bad backs. Hell, my dad is a 75 year old cowboy and he wants to sit on a haybale haha. I mean I guess if I was inviting prissy city people who would go "eww, not a haybale", I might reconsider. But...I'm not Smiley smile To each their own!

I was going to bring up the prickly aspect, but it looks like you have that covered... and everything else.

I can't think of anything to recommend so I'd say you are good to go.

Elizabeth - I love you "prissy city" people description. lol. Your dad sounds like mine; he's 68 years old...still rides horses every day, and if I had asked him if he wanted a chair versus a hay bale ---he would have laughed at me for even thinking of a chair. I can't wait to see the rest of your wedding/venue pictures. I am over-the-top excited about your theme.

Jelebeenz--Pinterest is annoying b/c it gives ppl ideas that they NEVER WOULD HAVE HAD if it hadn't been for pinterest. Elizabeth's choice to use hay bales is sincere, genuine, and well thought out-- she doesn't seem to being doing it as part of a trend or fad.

Like I said, I am normally opposed, but you've already thought of everything. As a former 4-Her, I can tell you there have been times when I (along with grown adult leaders/parents) have spent more than 30 minutes sitting on hay bales without issue. If you live on a working farm, chances are you're probably doing a lot more that is painful to your back than sitting on a hay bale for 20 minutes.
