Having a taco man to cheesy??

Rebecca, on March 30, 2016 at 12:55 AM Posted in Planning 0 60

We are having a Mexico themed wedding. Our venue is outdoors near the marina. Between the ceremony and reception we are having a cocktail hour with taquitos, chips &salsa, and fruit. For the reception we were thinking of having a buffet with rice, beans, chicken mole and we really want a taco man there making 3 types of tacos. Honest opinions, how does that sound? And YES, my FH and I are Mexican.

**Note: I've added some photo I found online to give an idea of the theme I am going for.

For vegetarians our taquero did grilled veggie tacos. And the rice and beans were vegetarian and we had a nice green salad.

Sounds awesome. I think it will be a hit. As for providing a vegetarian friendly option, one of your taco options can be vegetarian- potato tacos are a common vegetarian item at many taco shops I've been to.

Just make sure you have enough people serving that your lines don't get too long.

I would definitely ask the vendor how many people they can serve per hour, and then think about how long you're okay with dinner taking to be served- or if you want guests to just graze throughout the evening. You may need to hire multiple taco carts.

Are you or your FH Mexican?

If not, I would encourage you to proceed with caution regarding the "Mexican-theme." The way you've talked about it sounds as though this is a theme you've chosen for fun and not an incorporation of your own Mexican heritage into the celebration- and there is a big difference between the two.

To expand on my previous question... My FH's family is Irish- they've been here for generations, but have always retained their cultural identity & honored that heritage. We're incorporating Irish traditions into our wedding (our reception is in an Irish pub, our rings have meaningful Celtic symbols, etc)- not to create a theme, but because going to the pub with your loved ones after an important life event is actually very culturally significant, and because the symbology in the rings is a tradition his family has carried on for generations.

My family is genetically about 40% Irish but it's not a part of our cultural identity. If I were marrying someone else... I might serve Guinness because I like it and have an emerald & gold color scheme because it's pretty, but I'd never have an "Irish themed wedding." Irish culture is not my culture, and turning it a party theme is extremely disrespectful.

As strongly as I feel about this distinction for my own cultural wedding, I think it's even more important to be sensitive when the culture belongs to a currently marginalized people group (i.e., Mexicans). There's nothing wrong with your chosen color scheme or wanting to serve Mexican food, but I would urge you to reconsider taking it further than that.

Ummmm when again? I love tacos!! Weddings need to represent who you are. If it's what you want who cares what anyone else thinks.

What aCursiveLine said is important and way better than I can articulate. If you or your FH are Mexican, it sounds like a fun celebration of your culture and tacos would be a great addition.

So wait, she can't serve tacos at her reception because she's not Mexican?

I think it's an awesome idea and I'd love this as a guest.

I'm Italian and English and love tacos.
