Have any wedding shows affected your planning?

Yam, on August 10, 2019 at 6:43 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 13
Love ‘em or hate ‘em, there’s a lot of wedding shows out there, from dress shopping, planning entire weddings and even wedding competitions. Have you ever watched a show that had an impact on your own planning?

Maybe you saw your dream gown on Say Yes to the Dress.
Maybe watching couples plan a wedding and seeing their budget on Rich Bride Poor Bride or Platinum Weddings helped you even plan yours.
Maybe seeing the meltdowns on Bridezillas showed you what NOT to do(like, scream in people’s faces, don’t do that)
Maybe watching full weddings on Four Weddings was an eye opener in terms of food and decor, or you liked something one of the brides had that you wanted for your own wedding!
Maybe you saw a really unique cake on Wedding Cake Championship that you wanted the elements for your own cake.

I sometimes watch these fun shows with my mom, I’ve been watching Say Yes to the Dress since I was a teen. I even saw my dress on an episode! That show definitely was a deciding factor for my dress.

Any time I see an outdoor forest or garden wedding I pay a little more attention to the decor, especially the flowers.

I’ve definitely been influenced by heartfelt touches from these shows from the DIY brides. Lots of good ideas!

For the most part these shows are just entertainment but have they affected your planning in any way?

I have been watching the “Four Weddings”.
In part so I can see what people seem to like and what they don’t.
    - Food: too little, not tasty/too salty, long lines for cocktail hour
    - Music: having a DJ that plays a wide variety at a sane volume!
    - Entertainment: A photo booth, something besides the DJ seem to be VIP.
    - Dress the Bride wears seem to also top the list.

I was a wedding DJ & the things people always talked about were
    1) Food/cake/bar
    2) Brides dress
    3) The DJ music selections, ability to request and volume
    4) Weather for outdoor events.

That show is my guilty pleasure but sometimes their judging makes no sense!

Food : Not enough food, too much food(wasteful), not enough variety, long lines, finger food, “exotic food”, food too spicy, food too fancy(lobster and a palate cleanser once, lol)

Music : They all seem to be in agreement that the dj should play a good variety of music at a comfortable volume but it’s split between dj engaging guests too much or not enough(letting the party die)

Entertainment : Also a confusing one. Some like additional entertainment, others say it “takes away from the wedding/doesn’t feel like a wedding”, the only exception to this is if the entertainment was connected to the bride’s personal life(like circus performers for circus performer bride)

Weather : Man that one’s so unfair. 5/10 the sky got angry. I understand their reasoning since if affects their good time but I always feel bad when brides get marked down for freak storms out of nowhere even if they had a backup venue.

Dress : That one is so hard. They all have different tastes so there’s no universal “good dress”, it’s cool to see it happen though!

    Ohhh, I agree!

We are havjng a medium amount of food for cocktail hour( and a half!) That is butler passed hors devours as well as a couple of stations/ tables. With the 2 signature drinks and an open bar.
Then a sit down plated meal and cake for dessert. We are doing a candy station because it fits soooo well with the “Harry Potter” Theme- “Honeydukes”!! And I am sure his mom will make her famous Italian wedding cookies!

Dj: as long as they aren’t mic happy and can keep the crowd going, take requests and keep volume at a sane level it’s all good.

Entertainment; The more elegant and less “invasive” ( ie: no drumming or Mardi Gras dancers) most people like.
We will have a photo booth and the Native American( I’m 1/2 Cherokee/Lakota and 1/2 Irish) feather reader- who does palmistry and tarot( think “Divination” in “Harry Potter”).... But that’s about it, maybe a “Wizard Chess Set” set up for people to play, and trivia cards from the games about “Harry Potter” on all the tables...

Watching four weddings sort of gave me ideas but in general I don't think I followed anything based on what I watched

I'm a huge SYTTD fan. My dad generously offered $500 to pay for my dress, but my greedy self wasn't satisfied. My mom watched an episode with me where a bride paid 2k for her dress. 2k is a relatively small budget at Kleinfelds', but my mom was in shock at the price. I tried to convince her it was normal and she didn't buy it. Now I'm so happy my dress cost less than $500. For me, the dress turned out to be not as important in the grand scheme of things!

Four Weddings and Bridezillas taught me everything to not be.

i remember watching the shows and hating the entitlement and rudeness. I wanted to make sure I treated my bridal party with respect. I did almost everything (DIY) myself because I didn’t want my friends to feel taken advantage of. Four weddings taught me to not just look at it as “my day”. I really tried to think about how my guests would experience my wedding day.

That's how we feel! FH hates those shows because everyone is so mean and sounds spoiled. I have to agree with him.

Brideszillas certainly keeps me entertained. I've been very chill throughout our whole planning process; but if my fiance is being a pain I threaten to become a bridezilla lol.

Yes wedding shows have affected my planning haha. It has shown me what not to do, that planning early isn't a bad idea, I've even gotten ideas off them. Im obsessed with wedding shows and movies. Thankfully my FH doesn't hate them. We watch them together and critique their choices lol.

My teenage self wanted one of those glittery tutu Pnina dresses and my mom still wants that dress, lol. We’ve been watching so many seasons together, it’s like soaps to us! I absolutely remember the 2k budget bride! She wanted a ballgown and they didn’t have any 2k ballgowns. My mom is still convinced dresses cost a lot.

Good job finding your dream dress for a good price! My FH personally paid for mine otherwise I would’ve looked elsewhere, he wanted me to have THAT one(we’re not superstitious, he went shopping with me)

My mom probably loves that show more than I do! I do love Randy though, I wish I could go to Kleinfelds just to see the staff.

I think both shows showed me how important guest experience is. I mean it’s a no brainer that we treat loved ones well but there’s so many wedding centric rules for hospitality I had no idea about. Both shows gave me a lot of anxiety actually. I’m having a full meal with staff to take care of my guests and yet I was feeling like hot garbage because I didn’t have steak of 10 appetizer stations. They’re both fun shows but sometimes I have to remind myself it’s just entertainment TV.

My FH watches them too! He only watches the competition shows though like the wedding cake champion show, every once in a while four weddings if it’s crazy enough. We give our own scores lol
