Have an awesome wedding or pay off loans?

Brittney, on October 7, 2019 at 5:02 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 20

My parents gave me the option of giving me 50k for my wedding or the option to pay off my student loans. I am currently working a sales job that I hate and not having loans would give me the option to get a job in the future I actually enjoy! However, I have also always wanted a beautiful wedding and my fiance's parents would be also contributing 15k so it would be a beautiful wedding! Which would you choose?

WOW! I would definitely pay off my loans and use the money your fiance's parents contribute to pay for the wedding.. you can EASILY have a wedding for $15K.. how generous!! And totally setting you and your FH up for success! To start a marriage with no debt would be amazing and such less stress!

My FH and I were given a similar option-my mom is paying $20,000 toward the wedding. If we’d chosen to have something small she would have given us the balance for a down payment on a house. I ended up choosing the wedding (meaning we have to wait a couple more years for a house), but I question my decision every day and wonder if I could still change my mind. I think, no matter what, that doubt/question will always be there no matter the choice.

    Pay off your loans.

You can have a beautiful wedding for far less than that and it will literally only be one day of your life.

I would pay off the loans and use the 15k towards a nice wedding. It's a decision between paying for your entire future versus a few hours of an overpriced party (this would be my rationale).

Could you use some of your parents money for loans, then some for the wedding? I've only been to two weddings that cost $75,000 or more so it's for sure not typical to spend that much.

Omg pay off the loans, no question. You can have a lovely wedding for the 15K that your FI's parents are offering.

I would definitely go with student loans. Any loans or debt of any kind would be great to get rid of!

You could do half and half or something like that, if anything.

We gave our daughters a set amount. It was up to them if they wanted to use it towards their wedding or for something else or some combination of both.

I would choose paying off loans. Being debt free is more important than a lavish wedding to me!

I would 100% pay off the loans. The savings in compound interest alone makes that the smarter financial decision. As others have said, you may be able to have a beautiful wedding for $15k (depending on where you live, this may be more difficult). Since you wouldn't be paying for loans, you and your fiance could also potentially add to that $15k budget. Or, there is also always the option of a vow renewal when you are more financially stable (which would most likely happen much quicker if you had paid off all your loans). One of the 1st things my husband and I did with our wedding money gifts was pay off some debts.

We're having the big wedding. But, I think FH is only okay with it because we own our house and are debt free. And, we are not creating debt with wedding expenses. Only what we can afford to pay without using credit.

I would use the vast majority of the money towards your loans. Starting a marriage with minimal debt is a great thing. We're putting a couple grand towards our wedding after my parents contribution, but we're paying down our student loans as quickly as possible with our joint income.
