Has anyone ever released fireflies at their wedding?

Ashley, on January 25, 2010 at 12:03 AM Posted in Planning 0 13

I would love to release fireflies at my outdoor wedding, but I am afraid they will die if I keep them in jars a night or two...and I wonder if they'll actually fly out when we want them to do so. Has anyone ever done this before? Do you think it would work?

I don't think they will fly out when you want them to. I remember catching them when I was little and then trying to release them and having to shake the jar really hard. Unless there are other alternatives then jars?

I know they used to make wire bug holder things but I don't know if they still do. And even then I don't know how easily they can be released...You might want to do a few trial runs to see how long they last and the most efficient way to release them.

Yeah, If I'm brave enough to go on planning for it, I'll try it out ahead of time for sure. Smiley smile I think maybe I should have a back-up.

That is so cute. I never thought about fireflies release. I am releasing butterflies right after the ceremony, I love butterflies and it will be so perfect. Just to let you know there is a song called "Fireflies" by Faith Hill and it would be just perfect for that time if you decide to do that! It's a beautiful song!

Just make sure that your guests who are afraid of bugs have a place to stand and watch that is far away. I am terrified of bugs (even fireflies and butterflies) so I would be very sad if I found one of them crawling on me!!

    Thanks Angelica! Smiley smile

As far as being afraid of bugs go...my guests will probably not have a very good time if they are. Smiley sad I live in Kansas...there are bugs everywhere; we're going to spray for mean ones like chiggers and mosquitoes, but there's no escaping bugs in general at an outdoor wedding in the middle of a field. People won't have to participate with the fireflies if they don't want to though. Smiley smile

I wonder if I should have the adults release them or just the kids and let the adults help.
