Has anyone converted their dress to a corset?

Hi ya'll Happy Thursday!

I got my dress a little over a month ago and it still fits great! I'll only need a little taken in at the bust. The only thing is I always wanted a corset dress, I love them and that was the only negative I have against this dress, it's a zip up. But it's perfect in every other way and I loved it so I got it.

I'm not having dress regret per-say, I'm just wondering if a seamstress really can convert it to a corset and it look good? Does it look like it was meant to be rather than an after thought?

If anyone has had this done and it was a success (or a fail) please let me know. The quotes I'm getting are well within my budget but I don't want to have it done and ruin a dress I love otherwise.

Lol guys I didn't intend to be rude, that's just my honest opinion! But we all have different tastes! I think it can be helpful to hear both sides if you make a post asking opinions.

Rebecca- telling someone that their wedding dress looks like hooker lingerie (even if it is your "Honest opinion") is rude, no matter what you intended. That comment was in no way helpful or constructive.

ETA: Erin- Mine cost about $150 which included the bustle and the zipper to corset conversion.

I can't wait to tell FH that I will be walking down the aisle to him in hooker lingerie. I'm certain he will LOVE it!!

I only know one person that converted her dress to corset; she had to do it because the dress was too small (long story, bridal salon's fault). It looked great with the corset - maybe even prettier than before. But it was a ballgown dress, so I don't know how it'd work for a fitted one like yours. Hopefully it'll look good! Smiley smile

Hmm I guess I accidentally let my 17 year old daughter wear hooker lingerie to her junior prom, whoopsy! And I'll be flaunting my goods in a corset back in 22 days.

Actually @rebecca it is rude and I didn't ask for opinions on the style. My question clearly asks if people have had success in converting the style. So how would your opinion that I would make my dress look trashy because YOU don't like the look of corsets be helpful when I'm asking if a corset conversion can be done well on a zipper dress?

@Erin, I have 3 quote ranging from 100-150, I live in the midwest. They all said that depends on how many loops they have to install and the material. But my dress is satin and tulle so I cant imagine the material will be too much. Plus I'm not needing to add sizes and I do not have any lace or beading that would need to be worked around. I just emailed a few pictures of my dress (I think I sent back, side, front and a picture of the corset style I like) to the different shops and asked for their best guess.

Rebecca - Yeah that was rude. Just because it's your opinion doesn't make it any less rude.

@MrsToBe What kind of corset did you request? I'm guessing the zipper in your dress goes all the way to your hip. If you add a corset that long, it might change the shape of your dress a bit.

Honesty is encouraged on wedding wire unless you are insulting someone's dress. That is never ok.

OP, I wanted a corset back dress, and would have done the alteration if I picked a dress that didn't have one. I ended up falling in love with an illusion low back dress that wouldn't have worked with a corset, so I didn't have it done. I remember other posters saying their seamstress did the switch from zipper to corset for around $150, but I'm sure that varies.

@VC the zipper goes to the very top of my bum... like if its unzipped you can see crack. lol Smiley smile I feel like that's where most of the corsets hit on mermaid and trumpet style dresses that I tried on but that is definitely something I would want to talk to the seamstress about. I'm not looking to "change" the shape just accentuate it.

I love the look of corset backs, but I have a gorgeous line of buttons down the back of my dress which would be totally lost if I converted it to a corset. But one of my close friends converted hers, and it looked great!

Mine was like that, it went down to my butt (lol). Make sure to tell the seamstress that you want the shape of the dress to stay the same, because it could make it wider on the top. There's also the option of having a corset that only goes down to your mid back (kind of like those in the first page of this post), and then have the rest of it as a zipper, if that ensures that the dress will remain snug around the "bum" area.

I changed mine from a zipper to a 1/2 corset (I didn't want to lose all of the details around the zipper) & I loved how it turned out!! Mine was a little tight on my bust so it gave me the breathing room I needed. It cost me $135 for the 1/2 corset at David's Bridal. It would've been $150 for the full corset. Here is a before & after pic (ignore the straps in the pic, they weren't sewn on yet).
