Has anyone converted their dress to a corset?

MrsToBe-BecameMrs, on April 28, 2016 at 11:43 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 61

Hi ya'll Happy Thursday!

I got my dress a little over a month ago and it still fits great! I'll only need a little taken in at the bust. The only thing is I always wanted a corset dress, I love them and that was the only negative I have against this dress, it's a zip up. But it's perfect in every other way and I loved it so I got it.

I'm not having dress regret per-say, I'm just wondering if a seamstress really can convert it to a corset and it look good? Does it look like it was meant to be rather than an after thought?

If anyone has had this done and it was a success (or a fail) please let me know. The quotes I'm getting are well within my budget but I don't want to have it done and ruin a dress I love otherwise.

One of my BMs who got married last year had her dress converted from a zipper to a corset and it looked beautiful! She actually altered a lot of things about the dress and paid a lot to have the changes done, but if the quotes you've gotten are within your budget and your seamstress is confident in her ability to make the change, I would say go for it.

It's actually really easy! One of my friends is having it done to her dress. The only thing is is it will add a dress size, so keep that in mind. David's Bridal does them all the time.

Oh I didn't know it would add a size... I'll definitely have to ask her if that means I'll need extra alterations to make it the right size

I converted mine and it's turning out looking really good. Here's a pic of the back of it. It still needs some alterations though.

What style is your dress? Do you have pics?

I had a corset back added in and it looks original to the dress. The only downside is it will take longer to get into it the day of the wedding.

@Kelly Wow that does look beautiful! Mine is a mermaid style its the first comment on this thread. There is no beading so I know that wont be an issue.

Thank you for posting a picture of yours. It makes me feel better to actually see one and know it look good.

@Meet the Wolffs. LOL I didn't think about the time factor. Thats a good point but I'm ok with it!

Thank you Kelly, and sorry I hope I didn't sound snippy. My phone died and I do not keep personal photos on my work computer so I couldn't post another pic. Smiley smile But thank you. I think seeing your dress and the other comments I'm definitely going to talk about this more seriously with my seamstress! Thanks so much!!

I had mine converted to corset from zipper, why ? because I fell in love with my dress and they only had it in that one size and the seamstress said i could convert it to corset to get wiggle room.... not to look like hooker lingerie. -end rant-

Guess I looked super trashy and like a hooker on my wedding day eh ?

Not me, but my SIL had her dress changed from a zipper to a corset due to weight gain. Last minute, even (in terms of dress alterations, we're talking a week away, here). It can be done!

    Hooker lingerie, really???

Hooker lingerie? Really? You do know a corset back it just a back that laces up, right?

Guess I'm gonna look like a trashy hooker... I love corset backs.

@Rebecca - that comment seems pretty unnecessary Smiley sad

@MrsToBe - in terms of wedding dress alterations, I think this is a pretty frequent one? Did the seamstress seem to think it would be easy?

    Gorgeous dresses everyone!!

I'm joining the "hooker lingerie" club! I've always loved the lace up look and one of the main reasons I'm adding the corset is because I want the hourglass shape on my wedding day. It sucks everything in and gives you the best shape! I can't wait. I'll post pictures of my "hooker lingerie" when I get it done. I love all the dresses ladies! Beautiful!

Well hooker and lingerie were definitely the two things i was going for when dress shopping so now I really have to have a corset put in!

@WWLynnie, I've only had quotes so far based on picture emailed and all of them but one seems confident. The one that wasn't said that the corset would not be hard to do but I would lose the shape (?) sounded weird to me since I fell like corsets give MORE shape but I'm no seamstress so I let her get in my head and I started second guessing myself. Plus when I searched my question on here everyone was talking about converting to make a dress fit and mine fits fine, I jsut prefer the look. I guess I over thought this one. Story of my (wedding planning) life!
