Handwritten or printed invitation addresses?

CuteNickname, on March 13, 2017 at 6:30 PM

Posted in Etiquette and Advice 69

My mother taught me that it's rude not to hand write the addresses on your wedding invitations. But my handwriting isn't that great, and a calligrapher quoted me $4 per invitation. Is it old fashioned to believe that invitations must be handwritten? Is it acceptable these days to print them?

I'm only doing mine by hand because 1) We're only sending 19 invites and 2) I'm vain about my pretty handwriting and rarely get to show it off. I can tell you though that for my first wedding I spent days hand lettering over 100 envelopes and nobody commented at all. I was disappointed, but now I know that it's really not a thing that gets amy notice. Smiley smile

WOW that Calligraphy is amazing Mai Tai

We will either be printing on clear labels, directly on the envelope or ordering the custom ones from WPD when we send invites out. It will depend on my patience level and budget!

I have been practicing calligraphy and mine is just awful compared to professionals!

I think that of all the aesthetic details, if it's important to you then go the extra mile but most people won't notice

Handwriting can be skipped but printing directly on the envelope looks sooo much better than labels.

I hand wrote mine. People are just going to trash it anyway. As long as it gets to the right address that's all that matters.

Anything wedding should be handwritten. You don't need a calligrapher, just somebody with decent penmanship.

I'm having them printed for an extra $80 because I think it will look better than my hand writing. $800 would be out of the question. I personally wouldn't do address labels.

ETA: looked into doing it on the circuit but it would take FOREVER.

I always thought that handwritten was the way to go, but after doing the STDs I am just going to put the envelopes in the printer and do it that way. I really don't think anyone is going to feel some kind of way over an envelope.

    Edit:spelling

@CuteNickname there is so many other things I think your guests would enjoy you putting your extra $800 for the envelopes too, food, DJ, drinks, photoshoot, more desserts. etc.

Girl, $450 for somebody to write on an envelope that is going to be immediately thrown away seems crazy to me. More power to the people that can afford calligraphy . Just write them. I wouldn't think twice about what your handwriting looked like.

I love the look of calligraphy but it wasn't worth the expense to me. I specifically chose Minted for our invites because they offer envelope printing (my handwriting is also messy). I think printing is a good cost-effective compromise.

We are printing on the envelopes with a pretty calligraphy font. I can't justify spending the money to have someone do it, and I certainly don't want to do it myself!

Honestly, I would not hire a calligrapher. It's expensive and people aren't going to sit there and stare at it and appreciate it, it's just an envelope!! LOL I'm printing mine or having my mother write them just because she has pretty nice handwriting and her fee is $0 per invite! Smiley smile but I personally wouldn't care if I got an invite and the handwriting wasn't that great! I think you're good!

I have been to a lot of weddings in the last few years and not one invitation was hand written. Maybe it's a regional thing.

@Vilma....did you just say you aren't going to hand write your thank you notes? That's a huge faux pas....

I'm handwriting mine most likely. FH and I aren't too concerned about how it looks. I can't imagine people throwing a fit about the envelope not having fancy writing, or if it's printed. But I think printing is also fine!

Not rude at all. This is 2017. Print the invites if you want.

Its 2017 - It is widely accepted to print the addresses directly onto the envelopes, or use pre-printed labels. For a little something extra, you can do these wrap labels - sometimes referred to as envelope "icing"
