Handwritten or printed invitation addresses?

CuteNickname, on March 13, 2017 at 6:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 69

My mother taught me that it's rude not to hand write the addresses on your wedding invitations. But my handwriting isn't that great, and a calligrapher quoted me $4 per invitation. Is it old fashioned to believe that invitations must be handwritten? Is it acceptable these days to print them?

Personally i appreciate handwritten addressing, and will be doing so myself, but the aesthetic is not as important to me. I think it's become more acceptable to print addresses however

I'm printing them on the envelopes. They get thrown out immediately and it was one of the places I cut back to put money elsewhere that mattered more.

Mine were handwritten. My handwriting is pretty good (until i got to about the 30th one!!! lol) personally i think it looks better than a label. I think if the calligrapher is in your budget, go for it. But i do not think that is necessary

I guess we *could* try to find $800 for calligraphy but not sure that's worth it. I guess the question is whether you as a guest would judge imperfect handwriting. ETA- math is hard. More like $450... still though.

The company we ordered them from offered to print the addresses on for a small fee, so we chose to do that. I have terrible handwriting and hand injuries from an accident, so I was happy to pay the price.

From a wedding planning aspect now if I got one that had a printed address or even a label with the printed address on it (which is what we did for STDs) I'd think the people were smart and saving time. Like Nicole said, they are just going to be thrown away.

We did Avery address labels for our save the dates. I went to dafont.com and picked out something that I liked and looked fancier, typed all the address into into the template, printed them and stuck them right on the envelopes. So easy!

If you want to go for perfect etiquette, hand write them. I'm printing mine directly onto the envelope. FH and I have horrible handwritings and we're not spending a small fortune with a calligrapher for something that's going to go in the trash in 30 seconds.

I've never paid attention to that. I rip it open and immediately throw the envelope away

I had the addresses printed on the envelopes using a calligraphy font.

I would just handwrite them. No one is going to get your invite & be like, "can you believe the sloppy handwriting!?" They're going to open it & throw the envelope in the trash!

No, I would not judge imperfect handwriting. I think it is also fine to have them printed; some of the fonts are so beautiful.

I don't think anyone will judge or even notice imperfect handwriting. As long as is readable I don't think anybody will care. From my part I don't notice, I am always more excited to see the invitation.

Ugh, we did ours with a calligrapher, but I honestly don't think it was worth it. I think this is one of those etiquette things that's going away because it really does not impact guests in any meaningful way. I totally don't care if I get a handwritten or printed envelope. Goes right in the trash anyways.

Thanks guys. Consensus seems to be that no one really notices the handwriting, and people aren't too perturbed these days by printed labels. So I'm going to cross this off my list of things to worry about!

Calligraphy is overrated. I would never judge anyone for the quality of their handwriting.

I would not care at all about the handwriting. It seems so silly to spend $800 for someone to write things for you.

I don't see how this is still relevant today honestly. It doesn't bother me one way or the other if the envelope is handwritten or a label was used or it was printed by a printer. Makes no difference.

I did labels. No shame the envelopes get so dirty from the mail delivery
