Hand-painted “harry Potter” Decor

Jennifer, on July 14, 2019 at 9:32 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 12
Soooooo, here is the first round of Wedding Decor that my mom and I painted when I was up seeing her, and my 21yo son, last week.

Needless to say it took a lot of time on each one( 4hrs on “Fawkes”!) and she and I are über proud of them!
But, 💔😓, I showed them to my darling FH and his reply was an eye roll and “Realllllly Jen?! Really? We’re adults!” I was soooo hurt that I snapped back( after 2 weeks gone, 2 days in the ER w/severe neck pain and vomiting blood- all ok now m- from previously broken neck, a horrid 7hr drive back, his brother and his family showing up a couple hours after I got home, him leaving for 3 hrs to do sports stuff- I’d been home for 14hrs most of that was sleep btw, the smoke alarms going off Bc of water leaking into one @3am & then a call at noon that FH Office was flooding his lower unit...) “Well we worked realllllly hard on them and the pix don’t do them justice...” “It’s stupid Jen. We are adults.” And then I broke “Well it’s a good thing you got your stuffy, boring, traditional wedding out of the way with a stuffy, Boring, ugly creature before me. And what the “f” did you expext when you began to date a model who was 12yrs Younger than you( or your creature ex!) and like to do artsy things and has a sense of humor and whimsy?!”
He just looked at me “Fine. But they are still stupid looking, and the Lion should’ve been Gryffindor.”
” I get that! But I wanted to have the YELLOW lion be Hufflepuff. And so he became that.”

My thought was people take Decor, we have 4 kids in wedding party, and they are cute. And saved money by ME( mom) doing them vs Etsy, eBay or hiring/buying premade.
My mom did the Ravenclaw Horse, Slytherin Llama & Unicorn. I did the Gryffindor Giraffe, Hufflepuff Lion & Fawkes.

We did a bunch of hearts in varying sizes in the Sangria/Wine, Eggplant/Plum and Copper Wedding Colours, and then a few in the Lilac and Peach to represent my Grandparents who passed away 9mo to the day, apart after 65yrs of marriage.
But there’s till a TON to do. Most is now in NY, from VA, to paint/make for our NY Wedding September 19,2020!!!!

What do YOU ladies- and get your FH in there too please!- and gents think?!?!?

To be brutally honest this look like classroom decor not wedding decor. If you search Pinterest for Harry Potter wedding decor I think you will be able to find decorations that fit your theme but feel a little more appropriate for a wedding. Here are just a few examples..

They're cute and I get where you're coming from, but I didn't think Harry Potter or wedding at all. Maybe HP with Fawkes but not from the rest. They do look more like classroom decor as Brandi pointed out but I think what is most important is how you and your fiancé feel about them. It is his wedding too, after all.

I have seen plenty of decorations of WW that I don't like, but it's not my wedding so therefore my opinion is futile. If you and your fiancé like it, then that's what matters.

Yeah... I agree with PP. These don’t make me think wedding or Harry Potter. Try searching through Pinterest for more ideas on how to achieve your theme. No hard feels though, I can definitely see the work you put into them! Best of luck!

I literally did these for a bridal shower I hosted for two coworkers this past spring (one got married yesterday, the other gets married today!) OP, I agree with PP that it’s important that your FH also likes the decor, as it’s his day as well, regardless of whether or not he’s been married before. (And no need to bring the ex into it; she’s got nothing to do with your relationship). I would try to scour Pinterest or Google for inspiration on how to tie in the elements you’re wanting without it looking too kids-crafty.

Oh we have that too. As well as glass figurines and art prints, books and DVDs to stack to put numbers on...
These were more for the little ones to be able to touch and play with, should they want to...

I have signs, and am using pages that are framed for the table names/numbers.
I have purchased many items from EBay and Etsy for the wedding, these were just the little cute items that the small humans can, safely, play with.
Also, his ex makes her presence known far too often for his, or my, liking. So, if someone is going to try and insert themself into my life- and FH’s- then I shall bring her into it. They divorced when the kids were 4 & 6- they are now 22 & 24 and don’t live with us.
Thanks all, for advice. He is okay w/most all ideas.

I’m just saying that by calling her “an ugly creature”, it comes off as very immature and insecure. Best of luck getting all the decor settled.

I have to agree with everyone else; I don't see Harry Potter at all, let alone wedding. If you want them to be something for the kids, I would designate an area and put them there, not have them mixed it with other decor.

They are cute, and your FH should have spoken to you better, but I'm not seeing in them what you do.

They are cute but I would not have thought wedding as well like others have said. They remind me more of a birthday or fun party rather than wedding decorations.

If they’re just for the little ones I think it’s okay. I agree though, maybe have them in a designated area for the children?

We only have the 4 in the wedding party. Ages 2.5-11yo at time of wedding. So they will be mixed in on the table for them... or at Rehersal.

As for her being called that it isn’t so much a physical thing but also her attitude is just ugly. And her butting in and causing issues after 8 years, and trying even more so now we are engaged and kids are grown and son has moved out- Daughter here 1/2 time, despite FH ignoring her has me at my breaking point.

Here are decor ideas I have implemented already, menu will be altered to have our Signature drinks too, our cake and the invitations will be similar. The “Sorting Hat” is for the escort cards. The 2 signs that are painted( Always and Love) custom done for me. And I’ve begun making the other one. Or a couple of them.

I agree with all of the other feedback that you have already received. I like all of the stuff that you just listed in the last comment but when I look at the wooden creatures I just don't see the flow.
I am sorry that your FH talked rudely to you, but at the end of the day his opinion does matter and it's important to converse and try to find the decor that you both like and want to incorporate,
