Hair & Makeup- How much to pay friend?

Ashlie, on January 2, 2013 at 4:19 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

My friend is in school for hair and makeup. She hasn't graduated yet, so I don't think I should pay her on the same level as professionals, but I do want to pay her.

What would be a good rate for me and my bridal party of 6?

Get 2-3 quotes from professional MUA's in your area. Then determine what discount you feel is warranted for non-pro status (25%, 50% discount) and offer/pay her that discounted amount.

I JUST booked mine through Queen of Diamonds and for me, 3 BM's, my Mom and MIL it was $365. This includes my trial for Hair and MU and all air brush if we want it.

Draw up a contract spelling out all details.

Hi Ashlie, welcome to WW! I would do what Michele said. The only thing that would concern me a little, is if a person with not much experience can handle makeup for 7 people?

    I agree with Mrs. S.

Hair & makeup for 7 people is going to be tough on someone not familiar with weddings. I just do makeup and even with over 20 years of experience, I bring an assistant when I hit over 9 people. And that's just makeup. I couldn't imagine doing both hair and makeup for 7 without experience in weddings.

With that being said, I would consider paying the going rate as long as her work warrants that rate. And if it isn't up to par, why would you want to have her provide services on your wedding day?

Weddings require a completely different skill set than hair and makeup in a salon for the day to day customer. You need it to last for an entire day and well into the evening. You need it to look flawless as this will be the most photographed day of your life. If the makeup isn't done properly or your hair begins to to fall or become a mess, your photos will reflect it.

@ Stephanie, would you mind me asking how much your rates are? I am getting married in Orlando area... however, your website is blocked at work and I can't get to your contact info =(.

I agree with Michele, and with Stephanie: professionally speaking, it's not possible to do both quality hair AND makeup for a party of 7 without having an assistant. It is also (as Stephanie states, which is absolutely ture) require a different skill and application technique, because your makeup should not only be flawless, it should last all day. Same goes for hair. You don't want your "look" to disintegrate within a couple of hours. Do a trial to see how long your hair and makeup would last, and if you are satisfied, suggest your friend to bring an assistant. Then you can calculate payment based on Michele's advice. However, if the results of your trial are not "long-lasting", I strongly suggest to seek a help of an experienced wedding professional!

I am paying $75 for hair, and $35 for makeup, and each girl is paying $50 for hair. Mine includes trial, and theirs doesn't.

@MrsNrs if you would like to contact me through WW or email me at *********@***************.*** I can provide you with the rates. They will vary based on the number of ladies receiving makeup. For makeup services in Orlando, it would vary between $150 for one person to $50 pp with at least 5 ladies receiving makeup.

Well you see, I have 2 friends in beauty school. I've asked both of them but I've only had one respond and agree to do the hair and makeup. I'm not sure if the other one has gotten the message yet. So hopefully I'll have both of them working on us!

You definitely need more than one person and you definitely need a contract. You also want to be very sure that the makeup people know how to do makeup that looks good both in person and on camera.
