Hair and make up - who pays

Rachael, on January 13, 2018 at 10:45 AM

This may be a silly question but I don’t want to be rude if I’m totally off the mark. For a professional doing the hair and make up for my bridesmaids do they pay for their services or do I pay for it?

^^^ this. I personally paid for hair and makeup for my MOH, Mom, myself and MIL. I think its kinda rude to require spmething and not offer to pay.

I paid for everyone to get both done. It was optional but since I paid, everyone wanted both done. I think if you're requiring it, it should be paid for by you.

My MOH who is my sister her sorority sister is a MUA so she’s doing the bridesmaids makeup so I guess they’re paying and I’m having my MUA do mines. It wasn’t a requirement for me but my sister said they have to wear makeup and she would handle it so that’s that.

If you're not requiring it, then you don't need to pay for them. You can just let them know the professional is available to do theirs if they want and how much it'll cost. Then let them decide whether they want to get theirs done professionally or do their own.

I am only having my sister so I am paying for it and calling it her gift. (I gave her jewelry when I asked her to be my matron-of-honor.) But I've always paid for my own hair, regardless of if it was required or not.

I'm not requiring hair/makeup to be done for my bridesmaids. But I offered to have there hair professionally done and I'd pay for it.

I've always paid for my own. Since coming here, I learned that's a faux pas, since we were all required to be basically identical (hair, nails, makeup, including hair extensions and lashes.... it was a nightmare)

Im having a professional do our makeup and gave them the option. Some declined and others didn’t. So I’m paying for me, 4 BMs, my aunt (who is standing in for my Mom that is deceased) and my Maid of Honor. I’m not requiring it though. Just thought it would be a nice gesture from me. I want us ALL to be flawless, not just me. Hehehe

I'm offering the services, but they don't need to use them. I don't want my girls to have to pay anymore than necessary.

Depends on what you want. I think your mom's in the wrong, if you're not requiring it of them, then you don't have to pay for it. Which you clearly already know, sense its what you said.

If its not in your budget then don't do it, particularly if you trust your bridal party to know how to look their best.

I think it's pretty standard to pay for them but if it's not in the budget, and you aren't requiring them to do it, then it's not in the budget! I would maybe explain that to them and say you would love to pay for it but unfortunately can't and if they by chance want to still have make up and/or hair done this is what it will cost and you can arrange it for them with your beauty team. My one worry would be, is that they then will be off getting ready on their own, instead of with you, especially if they find their own person to do their hair or makeup.

I am giving everyone in my bridal party the choice, and if they choose to have one or both, they are paying for it.

The last wedding I was in, we were required to have our hair and nails done identically, and required to pay for everything. It sucked

Sorry I should’ve rephrased that- she would pay for everyone to get hair and makeup done but with my hair and makeup artist is would be over $2000 for everyone. I can’t justify letting her spend that much on hair and makeup.

If your mom wants to pay for it thats really sweet! And I would let her.

My FMIL really wanted to pay for FWs dress, and she wouldn't even let her look at the price tags, it was a really wonderful gesture.

My girls have good taste so I told them they can do whatever they want. One is DIYing it with me, the other is going to a salon.

It's not common in my circle for brides to pay for hair & makeup. I was actually just in a wedding yesterday and we all did our own. I'm choosing to pay for hair only for my girls because I want to make sure everyone looks polished and their hair stays in place all night, but I don't care as much about their makeup so they will be doing their own or paying for it if they want it done.

2000 could be better spent in my opinion. Have you tried looking for someone cheaper to do theirs? Mine is pretty expensive but I looked around for a local hairdresser who does hair for 20-25 depending on length for the girls. Didn’t require it but maybe I’d you found someone like that it would be more reasonable. Makeup I feel lik is always pretty expensive. Some people like to do their own.

I've been in weddings where the bride paid for the bridal party's hair AND makeup, weddings where the bride paid for only hair and if we wanted makeup, we paid for it, and weddings where the bride paid for neither. I think it's whatever you're comfortable with. I'm pretty sure I'm going to pay for my bridal party's hair, but if they want makeup done, they will be responsible for the cost.

We chose to give each girl $150 towards wedding expenses and they could choose what it would cover. Some of our girls wanted hair & make up done and some didn't. Some wanted to stay at our venue (hotel) and others didn't. I wasn't going to force someone to do something they didn't want to do. All the girls chose to use the money towards the bridesmaid dress they picked out which was $150. Some of them chose to stay at the hotel, do their hair & make-up, or not at all. It was then up to them how much they paid towards the wedding. It worked out really well for everyone.
