This is what we have picked out for our guest "board". The white paint markers do not write very well. Not sure what to do. Black sharpie is way to dark and the silver sharpies are just ok. Wish they made a normal permanent white sharpie. Any suggestions??

What kind of paint maker did you get? They have both water and oil based, so maybe look for the other.
I’m with you on wishing there were white sharpies! Our guest-“art” is a black board with the quote in white so I really want guests to write notes/sign in white.

I don't know if it's still the case, but Michael's used to have a huge display of all types of markers that made it really easy to try various options. You'll want to test them on a sample of wood with the same characteristics as your sign (perhaps on the back, if it's finished the same). Daughter's guest book was Jenga pieces; we took a couple to Michael's and tested a bunch of different markers to get one that didn't bleed into the wood grain, was thick enough but not too thick, the "best" color, etc.

So far I've tried oil based. And an opaque paint marker. Both suck. I want to try acrylic paint marker see if thats better.

So I had a similar problem with the hangers I am using for my bridal party’s outfits. This is what worked.Guest books 2

I agree with the PP who suggested checking out Michael's to see if they have anything that would work for. Whatever type of pen/marker you do end up getting, I would recommend getting multiples due to Covid (so your guests don't all have to touch the same 2-3 pens).

White wax pensils x some varieties called grease pensils, last on china, glass and wood. For some reason, white, red, and yellow stand out from dark backgrounds. But light pink and blue and other pastels on the barrel are darker inside. So do not waste money on an assortment. buy 2-5 per package, red or white, office supply or craft store. I like thr old fashioned kind where the waxy pencil part is 1/8" or 3/16 inch, with a paper strip that peels back in a spiral. No sharpening, and it always has a thick bold line like a marker. Those labelled china marker are often fine point. What you want is listed as wax pencil- crayon tip paper, or bold paper. About $10 a dozen, or less.

Hi there! What sign did you use to direct people to sign this? My fiance and I are doing something similar, but we're not sure what to put as the sign...can't put "sign our guest book" since it's not really a book. Maybe "sign our sign"? Haha. Just thought I'd ask what y'all are doing! Thanks!

You can still see my pencil marks lol. But I erased those and added a border. Or you can make a sign that says please sign our guest board. Ive seen that also.

Okay great thanks so much!! And what did you end up using for people to sign? I see lots of good recommendations but didn't know what ultimately worked best Smiley smile

I got the white sharpie oil based paint pen to work pretty good. It works best on the darker stained wood than the light. Hopefully it works good for the guests.
